Casabe

Casabe

Casabe is one of my favorite Dominican staples. Made from the cassava root it’s versatile, delicious and nutritious!

It’s naturally sugar, salt, fat and gluten free and can help replace crackers, chips or even bread. Naturally high in fiber it can help help keep you full longer. Even though it has a long shelf life it doesn’t contain any preservatives and is typically made only of cassava root, oil and salt.

What makes it so nutritious? Since it’s made from cassava root (yucca) it comes packed with its health benefits. Yucca is rich in a variety of nutrients including vitamin C, potassium, folate and fiber.

Since it’s so versatile you can eat it in a variety of ways. From snacking on the small, mini crackers to using it as a replacement for an open-faced sandwich, I’m sure you’ll find a way to love it. To keep it healthy try pairing it with other healthy foods. Dips and spreads such as guacamole or veggie and bean based spreads are the perfect accompaniment. Personally, I love toasting it to make it nice and crispy and topping it with a drizzle of olive oil, high quality sea salt and a few slices of avocado.
