Last Saturday, the Aldea Cultural Santa Rosa de Lima welcomed art lovers to the opening of their newest exhibition, “Portraits” by a group of students from the career of Social Communication in PUCMM. It was a very successful gathering where viewers admired faces of people from all around the country.
“Portraits” by the PUCMM students and under the guidance of Professor Elizabeth Veloz included a total of 149 faces that were captured as part of their Seminar VI (COM 209, Digital Photography) and Photography courses. This exhibition is part Photoimagen, a non-profit international photography festival, organized by Fundación Imagen 83 and the Centro de la Imagen. It looks to promote Dominican photography to the world, discover new talents, showcase renowned artists and ongoing initiatives in the area of photography.
Reflecting many aspects of the people living in the Dominican Republic, “Portraits” portrays individuals’ creativity, desires, dreams, fears, grief, and love. It is definitely a thorough compilation of our country’s identity as seen through the lens of a young, talented generation. Viewable in the subjects is not only the good side of life but also what about life that may be harder to convey.
This exhibition was curated by the director of the Centro de la Imagen, Carlos Acero Ruiz which shared these words about the collective:
“For the photography and video festival Photoimagen 2016 it is of particular relevance the participation of a young institution like the Aldea Cultural Santa Rosa de Lima in La Romana. This new cultural center is led by fashion designer and cultural manager Jenny Polanco, who has always been a faithful supporter of the visual arts industry of the Dominican Republic.
Since the first editions of Photoimagen, the Faculty of Architecture and Social Communication have had a major presence in this festival, and have become one of only exhibitions by university students in the country. We appreciate the interest and support we receive each year from the Pontificia Universidad Catolica Madre y Maestra in both its campuses in the cities of Santo Domingo and Santiago, for being part of this important visual feast, dedicated to national and international photographic creation.”
The exhibition will be up until September 30th in the Aldea Cultural Santa Rosa de Lima, La Romana and is well worth your visit to view a personal look at our nation captured in 149 faces.

The Aldea Cultural Santa Rosa de Lima is on the left immediately as you cross the bridge over the Salao river entering La Romana. It is a white building which looks a little like a fortress (hence the former name – La Fortaleza). To get to it you need to be on the side of the road heading back out of La Romana, before crossing the bridge you turn right and cross over the railway tracks.
