You’ve probably heard of fabulous little bugs called probiotics. They are healthy bugs that keep our gut, and therefore our body healthy.
In fact many believe that the foundation of good health starts in the gut so without healthy bacteria you’ll never achieve optimal health. And while there’s nothing wrong with taking a probiotic supplement, I’m a fan of actually eating the food rather than taking a pill so here are my top picks for getting probiotics into your body.
1. Sauerkraut or Kimchi.
Kimchi is just Korean sauerkraut, so they’re both fermented cabbage with different spices. I literally eat this every day that I’m at home. It’s also high in other great nutrients including iron, calcium and a whole host of vitamins. It can also help you digest animal products so it makes a great addition to any animal protein.
This is technically yogurt that has been fermented. While yogurt contains a few strands of probiotics it’s not really going to help you achieve gut health, kefir is the way to go. It looks and tastes just like drinkable yogurt and comes in a variety of flavors. It makes a great snack or smoothie addition.
3. Miso soup.
Made from fermented soybeans, rice or barley, miso is filled to the brim with healthy bacteria and has also been known to help improve digestion. Just make sure you choose organic since about 90% of the soybean production is genetically modified and can cause more harm than good.
