When Colin Scott, yes THE Colin Scott, the man whose signature is the “Golden Signature” on every bottle of Chivas Regal 18 Golden Signature, came to Casa de Campo we were understandably very excited. And the undoubted highlight of his visit? The tasting dinner and party hosted by Chivas Regal 18 and Eudaldo Hernandez on Saturday June 7th 2014.
Colin Scott’s visit to Casa de Campo started with an interview for our sister publication, CasaLife, the exclusive resort and resident magazine, an interview conducted by the president of CasaLife himself, Philip Silvestri. Following that we stuck with Colin for a cocktail in the Plaza Portofino of the Marina Casa de Campo hosted by Fairline Antilles yachts and Chivas 18. (Click here for some photos and to read more about that.)
So what could be done to end the visit of such a legend in true Casa de Campo style? Well what better than a tasting dinner led by the Chivas Master Blender himself, followed by a party complete with an acrobatic dancer!?
The elegant dinner took place in the Casa de Campo villa of Eudaldo Hernandez, president of ERH Marine and Fairline Antilles yachts, who also co-hosted the welcome cocktail the previous evening. Among the honored guests was Steven Fisher, His Majesty’s Ambassador for the United Kingdom in the Dominican Republic, who, like many Britons is quiet the Scotch connoisseur and the perfect addition to any gathering centered around celebrating a product or person in this case, of Great Britain.
The evening began with cocktails around the pool, although most guests elected to enjoy their Chivas Regal 18, on the rocks, or in the style of Colin Scott – with water. You see as we had learnt the previous evening, not only did Colin Scott, yes the actual creator of Chivas Regal 18, recommend that we enjoy Chivas 18 however we like it (even if that is with coca cola – considered sacrilege to many), Colin Scott himself actually enjoys drinking Chivas Regal 18 with water – how much water is again up to you – but the idea is that the water takes the edge off of the alcohol and allows you to really enjoy the more than 85 flavors.
Dinner prepared by Chef Ciro Casola, chef-owner of Osteria da Ciro in Santo Domingo, was then served under the stars. The delicious menu designed to pair perfectly with the 7-course menu which included dishes such as scallops with coco, steak tartare with gorgonzola and prosciutto and lamb risotto, was exquisite and animated by the commentary of Colin Scott himself, who between courses encouraged us to drink up and to keep enjoying those delicious 85 flavors of the Chivas Regal 18.
At the end of dinner, as the most divine desert “Baba Chivas 18” a cake soaked in this fine Scotch, was served, the guests were presented with a gift – a bottle of Chivas Regal 18 signed (again) by Colin Scott himself, as well as a nosing glass and a slightly rude-looking contraption to be used to create spherical ice cubes.
Hendrik Kelner, Master Blender for Davidoff Cigars, known as “the tobacco man” in the Dominican Republic was also an honored guest at the occasion. Following dinner, Hendrik led the guests through cigar tasting, the perfect complement to the Chivas 18.
Following dinner, guests enjoyed a party which opened with a spectacular aerial performance by a gymnast suspended from ribbons, and continued with a lot more Chivas Regal 18, and even more delicious food.
It was quiet the evening!
