Bath Salts

Just the thought of a nice, hot, relaxing bath can bring soothing energy and help you calm down. Baths are great for relaxation and self-nourishment, but you can make them even better by adding some Epsom salts to your ritual.

Epsom salt is high in magnesium and when we soak in it, it goes right through the body’s largest organ- the skin. Magnesium is one of the most important minerals for a healthy body but, unfortunately, magnesium deficiency is very common and can lead to so many health problems including chronic fatigue, joint pain, stress-related illness, and even heart disease and strokes.

Industrial farming can deplete magnesium from the soil, which is one of the reasons we no longer get enough magnesium like our ancestors used to. Even worse, the modern diet is high in sugars, fats and proteins, which can also speed up the magnesium depletion leaving your body in a magnesium deficit.

Not all dietary magnesium supplements are created equally, so even if you are taking an oral supplement you may not be absorbing all of it.

Since we can’t change the way farming has changed, one of the best things we can do is to try to absorb magnesium through the skin. An Epsom salt bath is a great way to do this! Here are some of the believed benefits of increasing magnesium levels through Epsom salt baths:

  • Improved circulation and lowered blood pressure.
  • Improved nerve function thanks to better electrolyte regulation.
  • Stress relief! Too much adrenaline and stress in your daily life can drain magnesium even farther and magnesium is a natural stress reliever!
  • Reduced inflammation and muscle pain, making it a great idea after a strenuous workout.

If you can, try to soak in an Epsom salt bath about 3 times a week. Use about 2 cups of salts in warm bath water and aim for a 15-20 minute soak. To make it even more indulgent, you can add some relaxing essential oils such as lavender or cedarwood.
