The 1st annual 10K Bayahibe-Dominicus Marathon took place last Saturday the 28th of October, and was a great success with the participation of hundreds of domestic and foreign visitors. The event was organized by the La Romana – Bayahibe Hotels Association and the La Romana – Bayahibe Tourism Cluster.

Taking part in the marathon were 350 runners, of different nationalities, both professional and amateur runners, who enthusiastically completed the ten kilometer route between the two tourist destinations of La Romana and Bayahibe.

In the male category, first place was won by Toribio Rosa, while the podium was completed by Nelson Perez (in second place) and José Andrés Ubiera (in third place); in the female category, the expert runner Yardenia Diaz took gold, while silver was taken home by Yaiza Sanchez and the bronze went to Soranyi Rodriguez.

The winners of the top five awards each took home prize money of RD$15000, RD$12000, RD$9000, RD$6000 and RD$4000 pesos, respectively, and the first three winners also received a complimentary weekend for two, at hotels in the La Romana – Bayahibe area.

Runners of all ages took part, in the categories of 29 and under, 30-39, 40-49 and over 50’s, who completed a route that led from the parking lot of Bayahibe, passing along the beach of the Casa del Mar hotel to the Dominicus road and the hotels of the Dominicus area, before looping back to the start (and finish) line in Bayahibe.

The activity, aimed to promote all the active and healthy activities that tourists to this destination can enjoy, and united many people from all around the Dominican Republic and abroad, making the area the focus of attention throughout the weekend.

Ana Garcia, executive director of the La Romana – Bayahibe Tourism Cluster, told Casa de Campo Living that the organizing committee was very pleased with the success of the event, part of their long-term goal to promote the La Romana – Bayahibe as a pristine tourist destination – with one of the most beautiful beaches of the Dominican Republic; “La Laguna” beach, the first beach in the country to receive an EU “Blue Flag” certification.

The next big event scheduled for the Bayahibe area is the 2nd annual Lionfish tournament, which will take place on Sunday the 20th of October.
