Food-lovers are becoming ever more interested in the food they eat, where it comes from, and how it was cultivated. Just 3 minutes away from the new Casa de Campo main entrance is the Heart to Heart Foundation, an organization dedicated to working for the social and economic development of the communities in our area. The Foundation’s School Orchard is also home to a small organic farmer’s market which opens its doors once a week to community members interested in purchasing fresh produce that is picked just minutes before it is sold.
As spinach, lettuce, arugula, papaya, tomatoes, eggplants, zucchini and other fruits and vegetables in season grow just feet away from the small “cana” roof-top palapa, produce collected from small-scale farmers in the area is sold at the Earth Market every Saturday from 10:00am to 1:00pm to avid food-lovers that arrive early to pick the ripest ingredients for a week’s worth of cooking adventures.
While happy shoppers leave every week with baskets full of tasty and healthy ingredients, local communities benefit from selling what has been sustainably cultivated in their own backyards and homes. After the farmers and shoppers leave, the students from the Heart to Heart Foundation learn to harvest their own food and how to care for the land at the School’s Orchard.
The Earth Market is located next door to the Hotel Vecchia Caserma, located to the left of the entrance to La Estancia golf resort, exit “Boca de Chavon” off of the Autopista del Coral highway.
The following photos were taken during a visit to La Estancia Organic Market:
Mercado de la Tierra
When: EVERY Saturday, 10am – 3pm
Where: On the highway take the exit signposted “Boca de Chavón”, and go under the bridge to the other side, turn left onto the road in front of La Estancia and then turn right and you’ll find the market right there – it’s very close to the Vecchia Caserma hotel.
