* UPDATE: Due to Hurricane Irma, The Gallery will open the exhibition “Savages” THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 14th. We hope everyone stayed safe during the storm and will come out next week to support these two artists who have strong ties to the community and Altos de Chavón.
The main gallery of Altos de Chavón announces the opening of the exhibition “Savages” on Thursday, September 7th by Dominican artists Joao Rodríguez and George Heinsen. The exhibition will remain open to the public until October 1st, 2017.
Joao Rodríguez graduated from Fine Arts and Illustration at The Altos de Chavón School of Design and later studied Direction and Realization of Fiction Series in Antonio de Nebrija, Spain. He has won numerous awards, including first place in the Poster Contest for the National Carnival Parade in 2013, and in 2016 won the “Construye tu Futuro” from the Bosch campaign design contest in Spain. Joao has worked as a design consultant for clients such as Cuts, Aborigines, Bits and Eraca, as well as participated in several exhibitions in the country, including “Entre lo Público lo Privado y lo Secreto” and “Holistic in Altos de Chavón.”
George Heinsen, also a Chavonero, has several pieces on display in The Gallery which can also be found in the Art Chavón 2017 catalog. In 2015, he was selected as a finalist in the Diario Libre Contemporary Art awards, and has previously participated in the “Charrete-Santiago 500 years’’ journey with Brazilian architect, Jaime Lerner. In 2010, he received a degree in Architecture from PUCMM and was selected to participate in the Continuing Education program for artists and workshop scriptures for artists in the Centro Leon in Santiago de los Caballeros. He collaborated with the development of the “Parque Lineal Arroyo Gurabo” with the urban team of Curitiba, Brazil; and in 2014, was part of the exhibition, “Holistic” here in Chavón along with Joao Rodriguez and Yoel Bordas.
“Nature is an unfamiliar relative, trees are maps and animals are memories. The external search looks for broken ties and the internal one our dependence. SAVAGES is the result of an exploratory process that looks for nothing in particular, and is a manifestation of our doubts,” the artists explained when outlining this new exhibition.
