The ocean breeze in La Romana added a fresh note to the atmosphere just as Plaza Portofino began to fill up shortly before 9 p.m. Dozens of attendees settled at their restaurant tables, dining while eagerly awaiting the start of the tribute to one of Latin music’s most influential stars: Shakira.

From early on, excitement filled the air. Some guests arrived dressed in outfits inspired by Shakira — sequined tops, tight pants, high boots and sparkling crop tops — as a show of admiration and complicity with the performance about to begin.

At 9:15 p.m., the open-air stage lit up with warm lights and intro music, and Emely Venecia appeared to a round of applause. Her presence conveyed respect and admiration for the Colombian singer, while affirming her own artistic identity as the “Dominican Shakira.”

First set: classics that defined an era

The repertoire began with a selection of Shakira’s most iconic hits, the ones millions of fans have sung along to for decades. Songs such as Ojos Así, Inevitable, Si Te Vas and No Creo opened the show. The audience couldn’t resist joining in, echoing the lyrics and moving to the familiar beats.

During Ojos Así, some spectators even attempted to recreate Shakira’s signature choreography — fluid hips and sensual spins — while Emely responded with playful smiles and gestures. Between songs, she shared brief reflections on the tribute and thanked the audience for being part of it.

The finale everyone awaited

After a short intermission, the performance returned with a second set focused on Shakira’s more recent hits. By then, the audience was fully engaged — dancing more freely, raising their glasses and applauding in rhythm.

The highlight came with Pa’ Tipos Como Tú, one of Shakira’s latest global hits, which made the square vibrate with every note.

As the final chords faded, Emely stood with arms wide open and saluted the crowd. The applause carried on, with requests for more songs, as fans lingered in the moment. Some continued singing a cappella while the closing music invited everyone to disperse slowly.
