bayahibe sunsetSince the opening of the new Autopista del Coral highway between La Romana and Punta Cana has made travel outside of Casa de Campo significantly faster and safer – we have been getting out and about and have rediscovered a love for Bayahibe (now just 20 minutes away). pina coladaBefore the new road, travel after dark to Bayahibe or Dominicus felt a little bit risky, but now we have the freedom to pop over to Bayahibe whenever we want – and with many little restaurants offering up great food and cocktails at even greater prices – we’ve been heading over at least once a week! Currently our favorite spot, is “El Cafecito de la Cubana” which we have been heading to every Friday, or “Frydaze” as we’ve been calling it. Frydaze at El Cafecito de la Cubana In an ideal world I like to start “Frydaze” by 6pm – so that I can get snap happy and really take advantage of the spectacular sunset Bayahibe seems to be blessed with every single day (or almost). I’m serious – sunset in Bayahibe is legendary, click here for some of my favorite Bayahibe sunset photos and my tips for really enjoying it.

A beautiful sunset in Bayahibe bayahibe sunset

fried fishAfter a few chinola mojitos (RD$120) or sometimes a Piña Colada(RD$150) at sunset, we order the typically Dominican fried fish of the day (RD$290 per pound) – our favorite is the “Loro”, but some of our friends really love the “Cojinua”. Fried whole and served nice and crispy with tostones or sauteed potatoes, this delicious fried fish is the perfect way to celebrate the end of the week!

And whilst we’re waiting, we also treat ourselves to some of El Cafecito’s other specialities – like the calamari (RD$360) and chicken croquetas (RD$90).

The moral of this tasty story?

If you have not yet tried the whole fried fish at El Cafecito de la Cubana – go there the next opportunity you get, trust us you will not regret it! The fish is literally so fresh its delivered right from the ocean (about 10 yards from your table) and directly into the kitchen. And it’s delicious!
