A new art gallery has just opened in the Marina Casa de Campo; “Marinart, Picasso and Dominican gallery” – featuring original ceramic works of the great Pablo Picasso, as well as paintings from many great Dominican artists.
Pablo Picasso was one of the greatest and most influential artists of the 20th century, most famous for his paintings, as well as for co-founding with Georges Braque – Cubism, a style which characterises many of his most famous pieces, such as Les Demoiselles d’Avignon (1907) and the Three Musicians (1921) and his most famous work Guernica (1937). However, in addition to his revolutionary techniques in painting and plastic arts, Picasso was also talented with Ceramics; from 1946 though to his death in 1973, Pablo Picasso created some 3,000 ceramic artefacts based on 663 unique designs.
Picasso’s “The Madoura Collection” was auctioned by Christie’s at their South Kensington office in London in June of this year (2012), directly from the Madoura Pottery in Vallauris, France where they were originally made. The collection, consisting of 543 pieces fetched $12,584,141 – more than 4 times pre-auction estimates.
20 pieces from The Madoura Collection are for sale and on exhibition in Marinart, with prices ranging from just US$7,000 up to US$18,500. Amongst the pieces are Escena de Tauromaquia (1959) and Escena de Tauromaquia (1959).
