Fortaleza santa rosa de lima

The Dominican Ministry of Culture recently approved 5 new cultural projects for the greater La Romana region, in the Eastern of the Dominican Republic. Implementation of these initiatives should start form January 2014 – that’s right around the corner, so lets take a look at what we can look forward to!

Celeste and Jose

The Dominican Ministry of Culture recently celebrated the “Convite Cultural La Romana 2013”, part of the “Primera Convocatoria Nacional de Proyectos Culturales” (a gathering to unite cultural projects across the Dominican Republic), during which Minister of Culture, José Antonio Rodríguez himself a native of La Romana pointed out that in order to promote the cultural development of the Dominican Republic, all regions of the nation must be integrated.

Following this cultural gathering, the Ministry of Culture announced the following projects for the La Romana region: “Casa del Artesano” (Artisan House), “Escuela de Danza y Música Folklórica” (Dance and Folkloric Dominican Music Academy), “Taller de Lámparas Artesanales” (Handcrafted Lamps course) and “Cortometrajes y documentales de la belleza y cultura de La Romana” (production of documentaries and short films about beauty and culture of La Romana).

Two of these projects; the Handcrafted Lamps course and the production of documentaries and short films will be based in the “Aldea Cultural Santa Rosa de Lima” (cultural village), which was once “La Fortaleza” prison.

Dance and Folkloric Dominican Music Academy 

By Celeste Cruz and the Folkloric Ballet by René Carrasco  – the groups will be working with the following rhythms and instruments:

  • Production in leather and skin
  • Newspaper recycling
  • Plastic recycling
  • Souvenirs production
  • Elaboration of clay articles
  • Elaboration of wood products
  • Painting and decorating fabric
  • Artisanal design
  • Courses about the environment, marketing and sales and quality control

Gagá Music and Dancing Classes

By Darío Francis Candel – This project has a variety of components. One of them orientating the formation at a music level and instrumental execution of Gagá, another one about dancing and body movements, another about the construction of instruments and elaboration of clothing.

Handcrafted Lamps

By Jaime Wilson – The groups will be working on the following:

  • Culture and identity
  • Applied drawing
  • Painting
  • Materials (recycled and not recycled)
  • Basic woodwork
  • Process of elaboration of lamp/ metallic materials
  • Process of elaboration of lamp/ natural materials and recycling
  • Painting techniques
  • Lamp production
  • Lamp presentation techniques

  • Human relations and professional ethics

Production of documentaries and short films about the beauty and culture of La Romana

By Ramón Arturo Herrera of the Film Association of La Romana – This project will be incorporated into the ESCUELA INTERNACIONAL DE CINE (international school of films) that will begin their activities in 2014 in the “Aldea Cultural Santa Rosa de Lima” (cultural village.)
