Last Friday June 6th, the Hogar del Niño, education and daycare center in La Romana, celebrated their monthly fundraising celebration, the Café de la Leche, this time organized and hosted by the Casa de Campo Yacht Club in the Marina Casa de Campo.
The gathering has taken place at the Casa de Campo Yacht Club on numerous occasions in the past including in partnership with Scotiabank in September 2012 when the bank presented a check for US$25,000 for the charity, as well as in June 2013, when Maria Battle launched The Muse Seek Project.
When asked why they consistently support the Hogar del Niño in this way, Vilma Nuñez, Marketing Manager for the Marina Casa de Campo responded “we all have a social commitment to help and supporting the Hogar del Niño by hosting a Café de la Leche is our way of doing that.”

And while both former occasions had been a great success, nothing prepared us for the surprisingly magical celebration last Friday June 6th. In addition to good will for a good cause, chatter, drinks and snacks, Vilma Nuñez, Marketing Manager for the Marina Casa de Campo organised a magic show by Malabarte Producciones from Santo Domingo, as part of the events entertainment. And so, much to the surprise of the gathered ladies, they were treated not only to a magic show involving card tricks and more, by a magician dressed in a black top hat and a red bow-tie, there were also other performers who thrilled the crowd juggling and riding a mono-cycle, and even mesmerising the audience with an incredible spinning ball trick.
“We always like to do something different, and on this occasion as we wanted to have some entertainment at the Café de la Leche we thought a magic show would be something fun. The guests enjoyed it very much, especially because it was interactive,” explained Vilma.
The monthly Café de la Leche events are hosted around Casa de Campo by generous members of our community, or as was the case last Friday, by local businesses. The aim of these gatherings is to gather milk supplies for the Hogar del Niño’s “Crib Room” where more than 200 babies are cared for everyday, 200 babies who drink more than 800 bottles of milk per day! Since it was founded in 2001, this monthly tradition has been so successful that the milk gathered at the Café de la Leche events now makes up more than 60% of the milk used in the crib room.

The Cafe de la Leche is a monthly charitable event, a little like a coffee or a tea party held for the ladies of Casa de Campo (although men are occasionally invited) and usually takes place on the first Friday of the month, hosted by a member of the Casa de Campo villa at her Casa de Campo villa or occasionally restaurant/business.
