It is with enthusiasm and sentiment that we announce the fashion department’s graduation from the Altos de Chavón School of Design. This is the last year the fashion program will be in our Casa de Campo quarters as it moves to Santo Domingo in the Fall- more details on the new facility’s inauguration coming soon! The 32nd graduation will be composed of an opening exhibition of the students’ work on Wednesday, May 11th followed by the graduation ceremony on Friday, May 13th.
The opening exhibition of the students’ final work serves as an opportunity to view their pieces on a more personal note. Instead of like many fashion shows where garments are whisked down the runway and only little details are captured, the fashion exhibition on display will allow spectators to circle the garments, view their construction details and design techniques, and be able to appreciate their presentation. Under the direction of Marina Spadafora, students were given the tasks to be “totally personal and creative with their collection.”
As the Director of the Fashion Program at the School of Design, Marina had given them a presentation entitled, “Mix and Patch” back in January as a guide to hone in their ideas and intentions for a final collection that represents their cumulative work at the school: “A call to creativity! This year the graduation collection of the 2015-2016 Fashion Group, the largest ever for La Escuela de Diseño de Altos de Chavón, will be identified by a common intent to experiment with color, manipulation of fabrics, yarns and decoration. Mix, cut, patch, print, burn, experiment and startle!” The exhibition will be held in the Davidoff Building where the space will be divided into five different areas with original setups in each distinct category. Looking in from the outside, the venue will appear as having five art galleries with different moods and scenarios. The whole exhibit is a joint venture between the Fashion department, Graphic Design department, Fine Arts department, and of course the students themselves.
The end result will be an exciting mix of unique pieces with strong attention to manipulation, experimentation, and innovation. We cannot wait to see! It will be a display of Chavóneros creativity and sense of community. The exhibition will be on Wednesday, May 11th and is by invitation-only. The formal graduation of the students will take place on Friday, May 13th in the Plaza de Chavón at 6pm. After the ceremony, family and guests are invited to see the exhibition of the students in the Davidoff gallery. Select students will join Dominicana Moda in the school’s annual fashion show in October.

Dominicana Moda 2015 was pretty EPIC as it concluded Saturday night with Jean Paul Gautier presenting a fabulous collection headlined by Miss France, Camille Cerf, and then walking down the runway himself to the tune of Juan Luis Guerra’s “La Llave de Mi Corazón” to close the show. On the same runway and less than 48 hours before, the 31st graduating class of the Chavón School of Design presented its collection, Deconstruction, which got raving reviews from the crowd and fashionistas alike.
