Mercado de la Tierra Bayabihe

Magnificent news! The local food market “Mercado de la Tierra” is now open every Saturday!

Rebecca Hughes

On sale you’ll find a bountiful selection of fruits and vegetables grown right here in the La Romana-Bayahibe area. All products are fresh and 100% organically grown and include fresh herbs like basil, mint and coriander, cucumber, broccoli, radishes, carrots, peppers, papaya, melon, cabbage, and zucchini, as well as much more such as tropical root vegetables like the yautia.

The “Mercado de la Tierra” will now open every Saturday from from 10am to 3pm, BUT everything is sold on a “first come, first served” basis, which means that once they run out, they run out! Our advice? Get there as early as you can, or you may be disappointed!

So where is it? Leaving from Casa de Campo turn right and then right again to join highway (Autopista del Coral) heading towards the La Romana International Airport and Punta Cana. On the highway take the exit signposted “Boca de Chavón”, and go under the bridge to the other side, turn left onto the road in front of La Estancia and then turn right and you’ll find the market right there – it’s very close to the Vecchia Caserma hotel.

It’s also close to De Maria – which is in the plaza outside of La Estancia, so before or after your shopping trip that would be a great spot for a bite to eat! (Click here to read out review of De Maria.)

The “Mercado de la Tierra” is part of the “Slow Food” movement, a grassroots organization, founded in 1989 to prevent disappearance of local food cultures and traditions, counteract the rise of fast food and combat people’s dwindling interest in the food they eat, where it comes from and how our food choices affect the world around us.

This is your chance to support the local economy, while also getting your hands on good, fresh, clean fruits and vegetables.

We look forward to seeing you there!
