father's day

Today, Sunday the 29th of July 2012, is the official Father’s Day celebration in the Dominican Republic, which is why we (Casa de Campo Living) would like to wish a very happy Father’s Day to all the good daddies, who have done and still are doing a wonderful job raising their children with much effort, hardwork and love!

In the Dominican Republic we celebrate Father’s Day on the last Sunday of July (today), a day in which Dominican families gather together on behalf of parents, grandparents, uncles and step-fathers to enjoy lunch with a variety of Dominican dishes – followed by a moment in which parents receive many gifts as a way of thanking them for their devotion to the up-bringing of their children.

But why and where does this celebration start?

Here’s a nice story! The idea of celebrating Father’s Day occurred in 1909 when a woman named Sonora Smart Dodd who lived in the United States, actually proposed the idea of celebrating Father’s Day to honor her own father, who, as one of many men who faught in the Cival War, suddenly played the role of being the single parent  to six children after his wife died delivering her last baby. Thanks to Henry Jackson Smarts’ devotion (something greatly admired in those days and these days) and many people’s enthusiasm of celebrating Father’s Day in many other states, years later, third Sunday of June was officially established as Father’s Day in the United States!

Our respect and admiration for all Dominican fathers who have the privilege and courage of assuming this wonderful role with responsibility, love and effort.

Congratulations on your day!
