The Dye Fore iguana has been a Casa de Campo legend for as long as I can remember, and today we bring you proof that he exists!
OK so it’s not quiet as exciting or mysterious as the Loch Ness Monster or Big Foot, but nevertheless here we bring you a video taken by Casa de Campo local, Cassandra Lorentz on hole #14 of the Dye Fore golf course:
Rhinocerous Iguanas
This type of iguana is a Rhinocerous Iguana. Here’s a few facts you might not know about these beautiful creatures that live here in the Dominican Republic:
1. It is endemic to the island of Hispaniola (meaning it is not found anywhere else in the world).
2. They are a protected species imminent danger of extinction.
3. People eat them – which is why they are in danger of extinction.
4. They grow up to 4.5ft long and can weigh as much as 20lbs.
5. Their most distinguishing features are a crest of pointed horned scales stretching from the nape of their neck to the tip of their tail and a pseudo-horn on their snout – a feature which earns them the name, Rhinoceros.
6. There are quiet a few of them living in the area of the Chavón river, we saw 2 on a boat trip adventure once – click here to read more.
