Great news food lovers! We have discovered the most wonderful restaurant – serving not only delicious, but also authentic Italian food!
This review of Vecchia Caserma is brought to you by our expert food-tasting team of one Brit (that’s me – Rebecca Hughes), one Italian (Luca Banfi, who is also the Executive Chef at Casa de Campo’s the Beach Club by Le Cirque and La Caña by Il Circo), two 1/2 Italians (Philip Silvestri and Gildack Morata) and one Dominican (Rodolfo Bournigal – a self proclaimed food enthusiast) – an eclectic mix who know good food, and trust us this was good food……
Vecchia Caserma is a hidden gem of Italian deliciousness – tucked away, right by La Estancia golf resort (exit “Boca de Chavón” off the Autopista de Coral highway) it is a short 10 minute drive from Casa de Campo.
The restaurant, part of the Hotel Vecchia Caserma is simple, rustic and charming – located in the hotel’s terrace overlooking the tropical gardens and pool, and is open daily for both lunch and dinner. We were very pleasantly surprised to be greeted by extremely knowledgable, friendly, efficient and professional staff, as well as a very reasonably priced menu (especially considering the high quality of the authentic Italian food).

So here we bring you a few photos and a review of all the delicious food we enjoyed:
Silky, thick and creamy, a big hit!
A touch of balsamic reduction added a fantastic flavor. The potato soup is one of Vecchia Caserma’s most popular dishes and we can understand why…we all agreed that we would order it again!
Four cheese gnocchi
We all really enjoyed the gnocchi – they had a great flavor and texture. And according to Luca Banfi, our Italian chef they were really nicely (and authentically) made.
Sambucca and Shrimp Pasta – RD$350
A specialty of the house, this oddly delicious sauce which was simultaneously fresh, creamy and sweet – was balanced nicely by the shrimp, creating a very interesting flavor combination.
Creative and delicious- excellent!
Ravioli Boulanese – RD$350
A bold flavor from the sauce was combined with a delicate homemade spinach ravioli, whilst hints of rosemary and basil added a robust dimension.
Beef fillet with Mushroom sauce and veggies – RD$450
The meat was cooked beautifully and the portion size was perfect – not too much, not too little. The veggies were nicely seasoned, this is a simple dish but done right.
Chillo en salsa de Chinola (fish fillet in passion fruit sauce) served with mashed potatoes – RD$500
Another surprising and creative dish!
A delicious and tangy Chinola sauce went extremely well with the fish and was served with excellent mashed potatoes.
“If I had 3 hands I would give it 3 thumbs up!“ — Luca Banfi
And we all whole-heartedly agreed!

How to get there?
Getting to Hotel Vecchia Caserma to enjoy a yummy authentic Italian meal is easy! From the main entrance of Casa de Campo turn right and continue onto the Autopista del Coral Highway. Take the exit “Boca de Chavón” , turn left under the highway, turn left again in front of La Estancia golf resort and then take the first right – see the map below.
