Davidoff Cigars, the premium cigar brand, will be breaking ground on Saturday March 1st in Altos de Chavón for the new artist studio facilities for the Davidoff Residency launching in 2015, in collaboration with the Altos de Chavón School of Art and Design and the Casa de Campo resort.
The ground-breaking ceremony will be part of the Davidoff Art Weekend a special event to launch the Davidoff Art Initiative in the Dominican Republic, as well as unite members of the Dominican and international art community. Among the VIPs taking part will be Hans-Kristian Hoejsgaard, president and chief executive officer of Swiss luxury tobacco goods company, the Oettinger Davidoff Group and Stephen Kaplan dean of studies at the Altos de Chavón School of Design, as well as Andras Szanto, Amanda Coulson, Raquel Paiewonsky, Carlos Acero Ruiz and Sara Hermann.
The activity will begin in Santo Domingo with a Davidoff Art Dialogue at the Modern Art Museum on Friday the 28th of February, following which the celebration will continue in Casa de Campo on Saturday March 1st. In Casa de Campo, a groundbreaking ceremony will be celebrated in Altos de Chavón at the future site of the Davidoff Art Residency program.
The Davidoff Art Residency is part of the Davidoff Art Initiative, which supports contemporary art and artists in the Caribbean, strengthens art organizations in the Dominican Republic, shares knowledge and expertise about contemporary art, and fosters cultural engagement between the Caribbean and the rest of the world. The annual residency for emerging and mid-career artists from around the world, which will start receiving artists in January 2015. The program will launch with the participation of 5 international artists, whose names will be announced in June 2014, and who will spend 10 weeks in Altos de Chavón.
During their time at the Altos de Chavón School of Art and Design, the artists will be given a unique opportunity to develop their creative practice, share and exchange knowledge with local students, and undertake research trips within the Dominican Republic.
