Artists In Residence Altos de Chavon

Back in March of this year we enjoyed the ground-breaking ceremony for the new Artists In Residence building in Altos de Chavón. Well, today we’re happy to announce that work is already underway on this new project.

Artists In Residence

This new building will replace the old Artists In Residence facility which dates back to the 1980’s and which was actually designed by the Altos de Chavón School’s Dean of Studies, Stephen Kaplan. We await with interest to see for what the old building will be used.

The new Artists-In-Residence facility was designed by architect Adolfo Despradel, director of planning and design for Costasur and when completed will have 5 spacious and light workshops, bathrooms and a wash area and will be used by the Artists In Residence of the Davidoff Art Residency. According to architect Adolfo Despradel, the project is advancing according to plan and will be completed in October of this year.

The Davidoff Art Residency in Altos de Chavón will start in January 2015 with the arrival of the first 5 artists.

The Davidoff Art Residency is part of the Davidoff Art Initiative, which supports contemporary art and artists in the Caribbean, strengthens art organizations in the Dominican Republic, shares knowledge and expertise about contemporary art, and fosters cultural engagement between the Caribbean and the rest of the world. The annual residency is for emerging and mid-career artists from around the world.

During their time at the Altos de Chavón School of Art and Design, the artists will be given a unique opportunity to develop their creative practice, share and exchange knowledge with local students, and undertake research trips within the Dominican Republic.
