Just one day ago on July 13th, five finalist for Chivas The Venture 2017 gathered at the LADC Studios in Los Angeles, California to pitch in front of a global expert panel of judges. Actress Halle Berry joined the panel, composed of Adam Braun, founder of MissionU and Pencils of Promise, Sonal Shah, founder and executive director of Beeck Center for Social Impact + Innovation at Georgetown University, and Alexandre Ricard, chairman and CEO of Pernod Ricard, owners of Chivas Regal. Actor Josh Gad was this year’s Final Pitch host, and notable celebrities in attendance also included actors Don Cheadle and Javier Bardem.
What started on July 10th with 30 finalists, quickly narrowed down to 10 start-up companies after Day 1. Competing for all or a share of US$750,000 of the Fund (the “Grand Prize”), finalists were evaluated on a number of market and social and environmental factors. US$250,000 was previously allocated to finalists who had won the “Consumer Prize” that was determined by a public voting period over the course of May and June. With the purpose of encouraging businesses who want to create positive change, Chivas The Venture hosted its 3rd year of the international competition.
“We cannot escape the countless situations that must be addressed in today’s world – from the fractured system of education to the lack of potable water, environmental degradation to maternal health. Being inhabitants of the planet, it is our duty to make a change. The Chivas The Venture finalists are ambassadors for the positive changes that can be achieved through business, and I look forward to seeing their pitch in July” – Adam Braun
The five finalists who competed yesterday were Bioestibas from Colombia; RecyclePoints from Nigeria; Intendu from Israel; Siam Organic from Thailand; and I-Drop Water from South Africa, whose business profiles can all be viewed on Chivas The Venture website. The Dominican Republic’s SoloCoco, co-founded by Daniel Dalet and Abel Gonzalez, made it to 3rd place in Stage 2 of the competition with 3,028 votes in the last week! They walked away with US$17,976.76. Congratulations!!!
After a tough competition, it was Siam Organic from Thailand who took home the Global Winner status. The company whose motto is Transforming farmer’s lives, one grain at a time, works with famers in Thailand to grow Jasberry rice— a new variety of non-GMO whole grain rice that is extremely high in antioxidants. With Thailand’s 17 million rice farmers, entrepreneur Peetachai Dejkraisak explains, “We provide them with training on internationally-certified organic farming methods, and empower them to increase their earnings by 14 times. Many farmers have been able to pay off their debts, and their children can now come back to work in the organic farms knowing that it is a viable and sustainable occupation for them.”
The allocation of the Grand Prize from The Venture Final Pitch is as follows:
1st place: Siam Organic, receiving US$400,000
2nd place: RecyclePoints, receiving US$200,000
Joint 3rd place: Bioestibas, iDrop and Intendu, each receiving US$50,000
We commend Chivas’ recognition and support of start-up companies around the world who provide socially and environmentally-friendly business practices.
