In just 34 days, the voting poles open for the Consumer Directed Competition portion of Chivas The Venture — a global competition wherein startup companies compete for $1Million worth of funding for their social entrepreneurship businesses. To participate, startups must have a positive impact on society; and this year, the number of ones competing have more than tripled since The Venture’s beginnings in 2014!
Out of thousands of businesses who applied for the 2017 competition, thirty are now in the running for the global finals, among them is Dominican Republic’s SoloCoco, a handcrafted, 100% organic and unrefined coconut oil company, co-founded by Daniel Dalet and Abel Gonzalez. Daniel is representing SoloCoco in the global competition and recently attended Chivas’ Accelerator Week program in England in partnership with the Skoll Centre for Social Entrepreneurship, part of the Saïd Business School at the University of Oxford. There, finalists met the other international entrepreneurs and took part in intensive business master-classes to prepare for The Venture Final pitch, which will be held this year in Los Angeles in July.
The Consumer Directed Competition voting period opens on May 1st on Chivas The Venture website, and runs through June, wherein the public will be able to support their favorite finalist. Over the course of 5 weeks, the public’s vote determines the allocation of US$250,000 among the finalists. Every week it’s necessary to vote as the count is tallied separately — that’s $50,000 per week! Your support can go a long way in helping the Dominican Republic’s regional winner make their goals a reality! Meet all the finalists here. The remaining US$750,000 in funding will be awarded at The Venture Final.
A global panel of judges will evaluate start-ups on their (1) Market opportunity and size; (2) Measurable social or environmental impact; (3) Sound business model and organizational strategy; (4) Financial feasibility and sustainability; and (5) Skills, experience and commitment of management team.
