No matter how wonderful Casa de Campo is, every now and again, we all like to try something new and different, and so when given the opportunity to attend a Beach Party at Saona Café in Bayahibe, we, along with a cross-section of the Casa de Campo community said “vámonos” to the idea!
Hosted by Carol Trembley of Casa Wine Shop, who in the past has hosted some good times – such as the “Paseo en el Rio” up the Chavón river in 2009, yet again delivered a lovely evening.
With a delicious selection of wines from the best vineyards of Europe, all fine examples of what Carole has to offer in her Casa Wine Shop (www.casawineshop.com) – as well as French Cheese from Deliciel, and some delicious tropical treats catered by Saona Café, guests had a wonderful time catching up with friends, admiring the view across the bay and “tasting” the many different wines.
Among the tasty nibbles was one particular dish which stood out – the Lion Fish. Wrapped in a thin crispy pastry and a little bit sweet, it stood out for 2 reasons, 1) it really was quiet delicious and very unique, and 2) it was Lion Fish.Lion Fish are an invasive and poisonous species, that threaten the local commercial fishing and tourism industries by devouring other fish, which in turn damages the fragile marine ecosystem. Many business in the Bayahibe area are currently working together to reduce the Lion Fish population – by hunting them on diving expeditions and selling them at restaurants. So next time you get the chance to try Lion Fish give it a go, not only is it very tasty, but you will be helping the local environment too.
As our first experience at Saona Café, which is located right in the centre of Bayahibe, in front of the small beach, we had a lovely time and we will certainly go back and give it another go – look out for a “Casa de Campo Living review” soon!
