Last Thursday the 15th of November, 2012, the Altos de Chavón art gallery celebrated an opening cocktail for the new art exhibit entitled “Artists in Residence”, presented by Irene Rodriguez and Diego Cirulli, both part of the Artist in Residence program offered by the Altos de Chavon School of Art and Design – an event supported with the attendance of numerous students, friends, family, visitors and Casa de Campo residents!
Following the succesful art exhibit “Natividad: Santos de Palo de Bonao” (which is still on show on the 2nd floor of the Altos de Chavon art gallery), the cocktail hosted to open this magnificient new art exhibit “Artists in Residence”, began at 7pm, when many members of the communities of La Romana and Casa de Campo, united with a great number of students of the Altos de Chavon School of Art and Design to enjoy a wonderful evening.
Guests were welcomed by the impressive selection of sketches and pantings elaborated by both artists in oil painting and watercolours. Irene’s majestic proposal was inspired by nature with its chromatic variations and different textures – featuring (of course!) numerous beauty spots of the artistic village of Altos de Chavon and its characteristic antique architecture, among many other wonderful places of the Dominican Republic.
On the other hand, Diego Cirulli’s art work was developed from an investigation made, based on the different aspects of the Dominican Republic’s public education – during which he visited many schools in Bávaro – Punta Cana and La Romana, having the opportunity to get to know its context, the Dominican Republic’s educational system, as well as creating a visual file based on photos taken of the class rooms, uniforms and “the end of school moment” – possibly one of the most popular paintings of the evening.“La Piazetta, Altos de Chavón” by Irene Rodríguez
“The concept of this exhibit was based on a selection of architectural and urban themes of different places which I could work on using the watercolours technique.”
— Irene Rodríguez, Artist in Residencia at the Altos de Chavón School
“Salida de la Escuela” (End of School Day) by Diego Cirulli
“After collecting this information, I concentrated on the more simple visual elements that build the body of public education: the school uniform. I created several sketches of the little girls coming out of the school, pencil drawings (and faceless – to make it annonymous).”
— Diego Cirulli, Artist in Residence at the Altos de Chavon School

About Irene Rodríguez Irene graduated from the Altos de Chavón School of Art and Design in Graphic Design and has since then continued to work for the school and the Altos de Chavón Fundación in various ways; teaching further education at the Casa Chavón in Santo Domingo, as well as helping to commercialize the foundation’s artisan workshops and art gallery. Currently she is teaching a class for 1st year students at the Altos de Chavón School of Art and Design as well as being part of the “Artistas en Residencia” program. “To have the privilege to be a graduate of the first class of the Altos de Chavon School and then have the opportunity of sharing your knowledge as a teacher is a great challenge to grow professionally and personally, as well as contributing to the development of our country”.
About Diego Cirulli He works in the creation of sceneries and teaches art in his workshop “Kalos” (in Argentina), where he creates his art work. Attracted by the research aspect of art, he gets to know about (and becomes interested in) the “Artists in Residence” program offered by the Altos de Chavon School, during his first visit to the Dominican Republic in 2010. After being part of the program for two and half months, he has confessed to live an enriching experience and a time in which he has been able to work and learn from teachers and students of the school. For Diego, the Dominican Republic is “a wonderful country with a lush geography. With very warm and generous people”.
