Since Casa de Campo villa owner David Winn was diagnosed with ALS two years ago, his family have not only rallied around him, but they have also made it their mission to raise money to support others with the disease.

Over the last 2 years, “Team Winn the Fight” have raised funds for the ALS Association in a number of ways; through the “Ice Bucket Challenge”, as well as taking part in the annual “Walk to Defeat ALS”. This year and last year, “Team Winn the Fight” were the top fundraising team, this year raising an incredible US$24,000.

The Winn family were in part able to reach this impressive fundraising goal in part thanks to the generous support of the Casa de Campo community, so we though we’d bring you this little message from Katie Winn as a way of saying thank you.

“I am so blessed with all of the people who came out and supported Team Winn the fight in the Walk to Defeat ALS on Saturday, May 3rd! We got so lucky with the weather and it was the perfect opportunity to walk with all 103 of them in honor of my father, David Winn!

With all of your support we have raised awareness towards ALS and we brought a community together to raise money towards the ALS Association, who will do great things to help those with ALS.

We happened to be the top fundraising team for the 2nd year in a row, raising $24,000!!!! That’s amazing!! I seriously could not have done this without all of these loving and supportive people in my family’s life! It really makes my family and I so happy to see how much love and support there is towards my Father! It means the world to us!”

The Winn family clearly had a great time taking part in the Walk to Defeat ALS, just take a look at their video:

Every 90 minutes a person in this country is diagnosed with ALS and every 90 minutes another person will lose their battle against this disease. ALS occurs in men and women regardless of age or background. At this moment there is no known cause of the disease though support is bringing researchers closer to an answer.

Our memories of Casa, by the Winn family

With factories in Santiago, the Winn family of New York first started to visit the Dominican Republic in the 1980’s, soon after deciding to buy a vacation home here. After first considering Puerto Plata, they were invited to lunch in Casa de Campo and fell in love, “it was perfect for 4 children and perfect for me”, Krystyna Winn told us. On their third visit they bought their villa in Las Cerezas, a home away from home which they still own and love today.

A business man, David Winn ran his own company, the Winlit Group since 1969. This business sold outerwear clothing to nearly every department store in the United States, as well as to over 800 independent retailers. It was this business that brought the Winn family to the Dominican Republic, as they had factories near to Santiago. In 2005, David sold the Winlit Group to G-III Apparel Group, where he now works as Divisional President. Meanwhile Katie certainly caught the family’s passion for fashion and is also working at G-III Apparel in the Calvin Klein Sportswear division.
