On Friday, May 24, the Abraham Lincoln School community celebrated the culmination of a year of artistic exploration at the grand opening of their annual art exhibit at the WAO Gallery. Starting at 7:00 p.m., the two floors of the gallery buzzed with creativity, color and a vibrant spirit, showcasing artwork created by students from Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 12. Parents, teachers, and Casa de Campo and La Romana community members came together to celebrate the young artists’ achievements.
The exhibit featured diverse artwork, including vibrant self-portraits, captivating animal paintings, intricate sketches, ceramics work and awe-inspiring sculptures. Each piece reflects the dedication, passion, and creativity the students have poured into their work throughout the year.

A glimpse into some of the creative process
The exhibit offered a fascinating glimpse into the various artistic journeys undertaken by the students throughout the year.

- Second graders channeled the iconic Japanese woodblock print “The Great Wave off Kanagawa” by Hokusai, using oil pastels to recreate their own interpretations of the powerful wave.
- Dinosaur enthusiasts from the second grade took inspiration from Rob Biddulph’s children’s book series Dinosaur Juniors and created their own playful dinosaur cartoons.
- Third graders paid homage to Vincent Van Gogh’s sunflowers, employing oil pastels and ink to recreate the artist’s signature style and explore the concept of ratios and proportions in still life.
- Another group, inspired by the theme “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle,” created artwork that highlighted the dangers of plastic pollution in our oceans. Their thought-provoking pieces challenged viewers to differentiate between sea creatures and plastic debris.
- Silvia De Pool, a Grade 11D student, presented a piece titled “Essence of the Caribbean Diaspora.” This vibrant artwork explored cultural identity through a faceless woman adorned with a carnivalesque pattern, plantain leaves, and rich brown skin tones.
These are just a few of the themes explored during this school year, but there are many more!

A Celebration of Community
The Abraham Lincoln School Art End-of-Year Exhibition is more than an art showcase. It was a vibrant celebration of the school community, where students, teachers, and families came together to appreciate creativity, dedication, and artistic expression.
Don’t miss the opportunity to see it for yourself. It will be available until June 8, 2024.
