This Friday the 1st of June, the ladies of the Casa de Campo community will gather together to enjoy a very special Café de la Leche celebration at the Casa de Campo Yacht Club – with the enthusiastic support of some of Casa de Campo’s most talented up and coming artists!
No longer just coffee among friends, the “Café de la Leche” events hosted monthly to gather milk supplies for at the Hogar del Niño, have over the last 10 years developed into full-blown social events – one of the most talked about and popular activities on the Casa de Campo social calendar.
And now it seems that the event, originally aimed at ladies is starting to attract a much younger demographic – with high school students of the Abraham Lincoln and St John’s Schools, as well as graduates from the Altos de Chavón School of art and design, not only eager to attend, but passionate about contributing to the cause as well.
At this Friday’s Café de la Leche , which is being held at the Casa de Campo Yacht Club in addition to food, drinks and chatter, attendees will be entertained by 4 very special, passionate and enthusiastic young artists of our Casa de Campo community; Andrea Brenes, Argenis Lebron and Modesto Santiago, who will present an art exhibit and Rafael Gonzalvo who will be the event’s DJ.
Here we get to know the young artists a little better:
Andrea Brenes
Andrea Brenes, a student at the Abraham Lincoln School and granddaughter of Xiomara Menendez, the founder of the Hogar del Niño charity is currently spending her spare time decorating canvas shoes for fashionable members of the Casa de Campo community – and she is donating all funds raised to the Hogar del Niño.
When asked why she chose to help the Hogar del Niño Andrea responded:
“People get influenced by other people. In my case, I was influenced by my grandmother, Xiomara. She has made me realize that the purpose of life is to grow by shining light upon the lives of others; to grow together. This mindset has inspired me to collect money for the underprivileged. Decorating shoes, I believe is a simple and a fun way to do so.”
At this Friday’s Café de la Leche gathering Andrea will be showcasing her shoe designs – and you will have the chance to order your own pair!
DJ Rafael Gonzalvo is a 9th grade pupil at the Abraham Lincoln School in La Romana, who having started DJ exactly 1 year ago offered his DJ services to the Café de la Leche, because:
“It is for a good cause, those kids at the Hogar del Niño deserve help from us. Cafe de la Leche has been going on for a few years now and as it takes place it gets bigger and bigger, so if my work is a help for them, I’m in for it.
I feel ready and happy for my upcoming debut at the Cafe de la Leche, because this is what I do during my free time and because it’s a good way to help the Cafe de la Leche grow. I have to admit, I’m a little nervous about the event, because I don’t want anything to go wrong!”
We’re sure you’ll do great Rafael and I for one look forward to a little dancing!
At the Café de la Leche, Argenis will be presenting a collection of 5 new paintings, which are something new and different for him, paintings which he describes as “they are nudes, in a kind of surreal and abstract style, something which has always attracted my attention.”
Modesto Santiago
Modesto Santiago, who is from Santo Domingo graduated from the Altos de Chavón School of Art and Design in 2010 and is currently living in New York. Modesto will be presenting a collection “natural beauty” artwork at this week’s Café de la Leche, whilst he is back in the Dominican Republic for a visit.
“I support the Hogar del Niño because they care for children.”
We look forward to seeing you there!
ABOUT the Cafe de la Leche
The Cafe de la Leche is a monthly charitable event, a little like a coffee or a tea party held for the ladies of Casa de Campo (although men are occasionally invited) and usually takes place on the first Friday of the month, hosted by a member of the Casa de Campo villa at her Casa de Campo villa or occasionally restaurant/business.
The aim of the Café de la Leche gatherings are to boost the milk supplies of the Hogar del Niño (a daycare and educational facility in La Romana) – which uses the milk to feed more than 200 babies cared for daily in it’s crib room. Everyone is welcome to attend these great events and it’s totally free – you are just requested to bring some dried/powdered milk, cereals or baby formula to contribute.
