Last Saturday the 26th of October, the ladies of Casa de Campo were treated to quiet a handsome sight at the Casa de Campo polo fields – the one and only Nacho Figueras!
Visiting Casa de Campo for one day only, Nacho Figueras, model for Ralph Lauren and ambassador for Johnnie Walker Blue Label competed in a polo exhibition game at the Casa de Campo polo fields – an occasion which was (understandably) rather popular. A large crowd of Casa de Campo villa owners, residents and tourists, as well as visitors from Santo Domingo turned out to watch the game, enjoy a glass of Johnnie Walker and pose for a photo with Nacho – one of the world’s most celebrated polo players.
Amongst the guests in attendance were Ramon Menéndez Executive Vice President of Central Romana and Alfonso Paniagua, Vice President Administrator Costasur Dominicana, both great polo aficionados who used to play when it first started in the Dominican Republic in Santo Domingo in the 1960’s and later in the 1970’s when the Casa de Campo Polo Club was founded.
The game
The excitement started at 4pm, when Alfonso Paniagua made a brief return to the polo field and threw the first ball to start the game.
Nacho Figueras, playing on the team “Azul Oscuro” lived up to all our expectations by leading his teammates; Leo Matos, Enrique Bonetti and Alex Schad to victory 10 – 8 against the team “Azul Claro” with Luis Paniagua, Julio Lopez, Cali Garcia-Velez and Anton Tejeda.
Unsurprisingly, the player finishing with the most goals scored was Nacho Figueras with 5, followed by Luis Alfonso Paniagua with 4, Alex Schad and Julio Lopez both 3, and Enrique Bonetti, Leo Matos and Calixto García-Velez with one each.
The already exciting game was made even more interesting by the commentary of Dr. José López Larache, the Health Vice President of Central Romana & Director of the Centro Médico. A former polo player himself, and with his son part of the “Azul Claro” team, the exciting comments of Dr. Lopez kept everyone enthralled.
Having stampeded his team to victory, Nacho took part in the prize-giving ceremony laughing and joking alongside his team mates and rivals, following which he was stampeded himself by crowd of fans wanting to have their photo taken alongside this gorgeous star.
