The celebrations surrounding the Latino Baseball Hall of Fame Class of 2013 Inductions started with a welcome cocktail at sunset at the Latino Baseball Hall of Fame Fan Cave (“Salon de la Fama Fan Cave”) in the Marina Casa de Campo, an occasion which was followed by a beautiful starlit dinner at Minitas Beach, hosted in honor of one of the greatest Latino Baseball players of all time – Roberto Clemente.

Whilst many of the special guests and luminaries of the Latino Baseball Hall of Fame were yet to arrive; Teddy Higuera, Rennie Stennet, Antonio Armas, Tony “Cabeza” Fernández, Octavio Rojas and Victor Davalillo – all members of the Latino Baseball Hall of Fame Class of 2013, were in attendance and on top form – enjoying their first evening in Casa de Campo meeting and greeting old friends, as well as posing for photos, and signing autographs in the other star of the evening – the new INMORTALES magazine, the official publication of the Latino Baseball Hall of Fame.

Also in Casa de Campo for the first time were very special guests; Sharon Robinson, the daughter of Jackie Robinson, an American baseball player who became the first black Major League Baseball player of the modern era, when he broke the “color line” in debuting for the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947, and Luis Clemente, the son of Puerto Rican Roberto Clemente,  winner of 12 Golden Glove Awards, and the first latino to reach 3,000 hits. As well as Teresa Alou, who will be attending the Grand Induction Ceremony in honor of her late husband Mateo Rojas Alou to receive his induction into the Latino Baseball Hall of Fame.

An excellent addition to the line-up of superstars was Bernie Williams, whose phenomenal 16-year career with the New York Yankees earned him a place in the Latino Baseball Hall of Fame and having been inducted last year into the Class of 2012, he returns this year to unveil his statue in the Paseo de los Inmortales in La Romana – taking place later today (Friday February 8th).

The celebrations surrounding the 4th exaltations to the Salon de la Fama del Beisbol Latino (Latin Baseball Hall of Fame) continue today with the the “Desfile de los Inmortales”, the unveiling of statues at the Paseo de los Inmortales in La Romana, dinner hosted by the Latino Baseball Hall of Fame honorary chairman, Alfy Fanjul at Casa Grande, and tomorrow with the INMORTALES golf tournament on the Teeth of the Dog and the Grand Induction Ceremony on Saturday evening from 8pm at the Altos de Chavón amphitheater (please click here to find out about tickets.)

This recognition is given ever year by Tom Lasorda, who was exalted to the Salon de la Fama del Beisbol Latino in 2010 and who is one of the most famous names in Latin baseball – a former Major League baseball player, member of the National Baseball hall of Fame and former manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers. The award is for a non-latino baseball personality who has nevertheless made a positive impact to Latin Baseball, this year being given to Jackie Robinson, an American baseball player who became the first black Major League Baseball player of the modern era, when he broke the “color line” in debuting for the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947.

Joining Tom Lasorda this year in giving this award is Dominican baseball player Robinson Canó, a current major league baseball player for the New York Yankees and who was actually named after Jackie Robinson.

The Latino de Oro Award: Miguel Cabrera

Miguel Cabrera, one of the biggest names in Major League Baseball right now is the first Latin American baseball player to win the Triple Crown – and he will be in Altos de Chavón to accept this award on Saturday evening the 9th of February.

The Rafael Avila Award: Horacio Martinez (posthumous) and Epy Guerrero

This award given by co-founder of the Salon de la Fama del Beisbol Latino, Rafael Avila recognises “Scouting” legends of Latin Baseball – this year Horacio Martinez of the Dominican Republic and Epy Guerrero also from the Dominican Republic. A Latin American baseball scout himself, Rafael Avila is credited with bringing Dominican baseball stars to the Major Leagues – before 1970 there were just 24 Dominican baseball players who had ever played in the Major Leagues (including Dominican legends Ozzie Virgil and Don Felipe Alou) and now Dominican players account for more than 10% of all major leaguers – an accolade largely credited to Avila who recognized the natural ability of Dominican players.
