tropical storm ernesto

Following the popularity of yesterday’s weather update article and given that “Tropical Depression 5” has just formed into “Tropical Storm Ernesto”, the 5th named storm of the 2012 hurricane season, I thought you may enjoy another weather update!

Tropical Storm Ernesto

tropical storm ernesto

As you can see from the above image the “predictions” say that Tropical Storm Ernesto isn’t going to cause us in the Dominican Republic too much bother, but nevertheless here is a summary of what we do know about Ernesto:

• Tropical Storm Ernesto is currently located to the East of the Westward and Leeward Islands and is moving Westward, expected to cross the Westward and Leeward Islands tomorrow (Friday)

• Maximum sustained winds are currently at 50mph

•  Over the next few days, Tropical Storm Ernesto is predicted to continue moving West / North West, passing to the South of the Dominican Republic, Haiti and Cuba – although this does not necessarily mean we will not be affected….even if Tropical Storm Ernesto does follow this predicted path (which they almost never do), the outskirts of the storm may still bring us rain and wind

• As Tropical Storm Ernesto continues to move Westward he is expected to gather strength, eventually becoming a category 1 hurricane by Monday (after he’s passed the Dominican Republic)

Watch and Wait!

Did you know?

• On AVERAGE, a Tropical Cyclone’s actual path differs from it’s predicted path by 200 miles!

• On AVERAGE, a Tropical Cyclone’s actual strength (ie. category) differs from it’s predicted strength by 2 categories!

Which means that with Tropical Storm Ernesto still a few days away from being anywhere close to the Dominican Republic – we really do just have to watch and wait to find out if/how we will be affected.

Hurricane Season 2012
This year “Hurricane Season” is predicted to be “less active” than usual – with 11 named storms of which 6 are expected to develop into hurricanes and 2 into major hurricanes (category 3 or higher), which is in general pretty good news and will hopefully mean less rain, but you never know…..click here to read more about the Hurricane Season 2012 forecast.
