WAO Gallery & Cultural Center will unveil a captivating exhibition titled “Otras Aguas” by the multifaceted artist Thelma Leonor Espinal on Friday, March 22. Espinal’s artistic journey, spanning a remarkable 25 years, epitomizes a relentless pursuit of experimentation and a keen openness to novel mediums.

Espinal’s work is a fusion of action and introspection, inviting viewers to delve into its depths and contemplate its meaning. Rooted in her Caribbean identity, her pieces often spark conversations about human rights and women’s issues, touching on themes of gender, violence, and cultural identity.

“Otras Aguas” represents a significant milestone in Espinal’s artistic journey, showcasing 22 pieces curated by architect Ysmael Jiménez. The exhibition will grace the halls of WAO Galería & Centro Cultural until April 22, 2024, welcoming visitors from Tuesday to Saturday, 11:00 am to 7:00 pm, with Sundays and Mondays set aside for reflection.

Espinal’s artistic repertoire showcases a kaleidoscope of mediums, from painting to ceramics, sculpture, and photography, underscoring her versatility and ingenuity. Bolstering such cultural endeavors, the Patronato Benéfico Oriental, Inc. (PBO) continues its unwavering support for sustainable social impact initiatives, including those spearheaded by WAO Chavón. These efforts epitomize a commitment to nurturing culture, including WAO Innovation HUB, WAO Gallery & Cultural Center, and the Altos de Chavón Regional Archaeological Museum.

Proceeds from these ventures funnel into social programs, enriching communities grappling with vulnerability as part of PBO’s community empowerment initiatives. Upholding values of respect, solidarity, integrity, and equal opportunities, these endeavors echo PBO’s overarching mission to foster inclusive growth and cultural enrichment.

About the artist

Thelma Leonor, a renowned artist from the 90s generation, has left an indelible mark on the contemporary art scene in the Dominican Republic and internationally. With over 60 exhibitions across her homeland and abroad, including Spain, Argentina, and Japan, her career spans diverse cultural landscapes. Notable solo shows include “La casa de todos nosotros” (2000), “En la isla” (2006), and “Dejarse encontrar, reconstruir la utopía” (2023).

Leonor has also participated in prestigious national biennials and competitions, earning accolades such as being a finalist in the Arte Laguna Prize (2014) and winning the Juan José Bellapart First Prize (2022). Alongside her artistic endeavors, she holds degrees in Marketing and Cultural Management and has served in leadership roles within the Ministry of Culture of the Dominican Republic. Today, she continues contributing to her cultural heritage while residing between Santiago and Santo Domingo, supporting institutions like Centro León and Casa de Arte.
