Last Saturday the 23rd of April, Sábado Santa, we enjoyed a full day of partying, starting with the Semana Santa Polo Tournament, continuing with the Victor Manuelle and Don Omar concert and ending with the Praia party on Playa Minitas.
So a little tipsy from the champagne celebration at the polo, off we went to the Altos de Chavon amphitheater for the first concert of the year: Don Omar and Victor Manuelle ‘Encuentro de dos grandes.’
I had rather expecting that the 2 performers would be performing together, or that they would at least be in some way integrated, but as it turned out the concert was split entirely into 2 separate acts – Victor Manuelle sung first, followed by Don Omar. It was essentially 2 concerts for the price of one! So here I bring you my coverage of the first half of the concert with Victor Manuelle. Photos and coverage of Don Omar will follow shortly!
By 9:30, the audience had reached a threshold of anticipation and the concert began as Victor Manuelle burst onto the stage to the screams of his female fans and performed his well known hits “Que habría sido de mi” and “No hace falta nada”.
Singing mostly ‘salsa romantica’ (romantic salsa) songs the atmosphere became a little more subdued as couples danced in their seats and swayed in the aisles, enjoying the romantic atmosphere on a beautiful starlit night, with songs “Por ella”, “Tengo ganas de volver a enamorarme” and “Maldito el momento”.
As the evening progressed, Victor picked up the tempo and treated the audience to some more lively songs and some sexy salsa dancing, he even crouched down and sang to a group of ladies who gathered at the front of the stage in the amphitheater’s ‘Special Guest’ area. A true latino laies man, Victor Manuelle wooed the ladies with “Apiádate de mi” and love ballads “Si la ves”, “Dos amantes” and “Lo que un día fue no será”.
In a very impressive demonstration of singing and performing stamina, Victor Manuelle brought his part of the show to a close after more than an hour with “He tratado de olvidarte”.
Here are a few photos of the Salsa master in action:
