In the May 2013 edition of Town & Country magazine, the Fanjul family, major shareholders of the Central Romana Corporation and the Casa de Campo resort, are named in “The T&C 50” -the publication’s first ever annual list of the country’s most prominent families- as the #5 most enduring dynasty in the United States.
“The T&C 50; Who really rules America now?”, ranks “political dynasties”, “Hollywood clans”, “world-changing philanthropists” and “other great families” into 5 categories; Inspiring, Generous, Enduring, Creative and Powerful, under the tagline “Money alone does not a dynasty make. You need multiple generations, and some other good qualities -taste, say, or generosity- to reach the top of the social heap.”
With a more than 150 year history, it is no wonder that the Fanjul family -whom we know so well here in Casa de Campo- is ranked #5 in the “Enduring” category. The family’s successful history spanning 5 generations (so far) is remarkable. One of their holdings -the Central Romana Corporation of which the Casa de Campo resort is part- has done much to ensure the continued socio-economic development of the La Romana region and in fact the entire Dominican Republic.

“When Alfonso Fanjul Sr. stockholder of the Czarnickow-Rionda Company in New York and heir to the Cuban Trading Company in Cuba, married the heiress Lillian Gomez Mena, in 1936, the families’ combined holdings included 10 sugar mills, three alcohol distilleries, and real estate throughout Cuba. But Castro’s revolution forced Alfonso to uproot his family, leave behind a large fortune and art collection, and start over in the U.S. Today, the five Fanjul children -Alfy, Pepe, Alexander, Lian and Andrés- are the fifth generation to have a hand in Fanjul Corp., the sugar and real estate conglomerate. Radiating an Old World elegance -and an Old World approach to management- the family has a high-flying lifestyle that is best exemplified at its Casa de Campo resort in the Dominican Republic.”

Joining the Fanjul family on the “The T&C 50” list is the KOHLER family, including Herbert Kohler Jr. a Casa de Campo villa owner -who recently played in Alfy Fanjul’s Sugar Golf Tournament– as well as the BUSH family, who have also been known to visit the Casa de Campo resort on numerous occasions, enjoying rounds of golf on the Pete Dye designed golf courses; the Teeth of the Dog and the Dye Fore.
