After what has felt like weeks and months of long, hot, dry days… this past weekend it finally started to rain, and today it looks like we’re set to see another downpour, which makes now the perfect time to bring you our top 10 things to do on a rainy day in Casa de Campo!
1. Go to the movies!
This is by far the most obvious choice – it’s always dry and comfortable inside the cinema, no matter what the weather is doing! The cinema in the Marina Casa de Campo shows 3 to 4 movies each week, with movies changed every Thursday.
2. Board games
I love playing games, so for me this is my #1 choice! Gather together a group of friends, close the doors, put on your comfy clothes and slippers, drink lots of cups of tea and play, play, play… whilst the rain batters against the window.
3. Eat out!
This may seem like a bizarre thing to do, but there is nothing like a nice cold beer and some good food to help you forget about the miserable weather! I recommend drinking 1 or 2 more drinks than you would normally so that when you get wet leaving (or arriving) to the restaurant you may not notice or care!
Here we bring you some of our favorite (and rain-friendly), Casa de Campo / La Romana dining options:
AMAZING food! We recently tried De Maria for the first time and fell in love! (Click here to read our review.) And in addition to their really delicious food, you can also park right outside and they have a great indoor area to keep you try if it’s raining!
Location: La Estancia Plaza, La Estancia
Tel: (829) 203-0866
Opening hours: 8am – 11pm (closed Tuesdays)
La Caña by Il Circo
Great food, a fully enclosed indoor eating area and you can get your driver to drop you off at the concierge so you won’t even have to step foot outside!
Location: Casa de Campo Hotel
Tel: (809) 523-3333 ext. 3000
Opening hours: 11am – 11pm
Great food and also has a fully enclosed indoor eating area. It’s in Altos de Chavón which can sometimes remain rain-free even when it’s raining everywhere else and you can park pretty close to the door.
Location: Altos de Chavón
Tel: (809) 523-3333 ext. 5339
Opening hours: Thursday – Monday, 6pm-11pm
Dom Ham serves excellent burgers, fantastic German beer and you can park right outside so it’s just a short sprint through the rain and puddles.
Location: Calle Altragracia Esq. Benito Moncion. La Romana
Opening hours: 6pm to late
Although Casa de Campo and La Romana do have many other great dining options (the Beach Club by Le Cirque, and the restaurants in the Marina Casa de Campo among others), sadly on a rainy day due to their distance from parking lot and/or open air feel I don’t recommend them!
4. Pamper Yourself!
The Casa de Campo Spa in the Casa de Campo Hotel is a haven of tranquility, where you can relax and allow yourself to be pampered and indulged – even if it’s rainy outside! Their signature facial and massage is heavenly and so is the hot stone massage, not to mention the ‘Water Treatment Room’ where you can enjoy the private sauna, steam room and hot/cold plunge pools.
Location: Casa de Campo Hotel
Tel: (809) 523-8429
Opening hours: 9am – 8pm
5. Get fit!
Although rain can put a dampener on some sports and activities, there are several ways you can stay active in Casa de Campo in the middle of a rain storm, here are my suggestions:
- Work out at the Casa de Campo Fitness Centre!
The Casa de Campo fitness centre is one of the most well-equipped fitness facilities in the Caribbean and it is open for use everyday from 7am to 8pm, with a variety of classes such as Taekwondo, Kick-Boxing, stretching, as well cardio-vascular and weights machines.
- Ride a bike! Biking in the rain?! Ridiculous I hear you cry, biking in the rain may sound like a bad idea, but it’s actually very exhilarating and the fact that you’ll get a bit muddy just makes it even more fun! Be careful though – it could get slippery!
- Go for a run! When it’s raining in Casa de Campo it is very rarely cold, less hot certainly, but definitely not cold, which means that running in the rain (unlike in many countries) will not make you sick, if anything the rain will just stop you from over heating! Come on – a little mud and rain never hurt anyone and when you get back you can enjoy a nice hot bath!>
- SWIM! As long as there is no thunder or lightning, swimming in the rain is awesome!
6. Stay in and relax!
There are many great things to be done inside the safety of your Casa de Campo villa:
- read a book
- read a really great magazine… www.casadecampoliving.com, or perhaps CasaLife magazine or TODO Casa de Campo?
- watch TV
- watch a movie
7. Champagne and jacuzzi
Again this option is only safe if there is no thunder and lightning, so assuming it is merely raining, turn the jacuzzi on high, wait until you can see it steaming, grab a bottle of chilled champagne, throw your favorite man/woman in the jacuzzi and relax… Ahhhhhhhh!
8. Watch the Lightning / Photograph the storm
Did you ever watch storm chasers? If it’s raining so much that going out really isn’t a safe option, we recommend turning out all your lights, sitting by the window and trying to photograph the lightning – this is the most addictively frustrating activity, but if you succeed you’ll have a great photo to show for all your patience!
9. Go to the Casa de Campo Yacht Club
For members of the Casa de Campo Yacht Club, the Yacht club can provide a nice refuge in rainy weather. They have a satellite TV, from which you can watch many sporting events and other channels not readily available on Dominican television and the also have a darts board and billards table, as well as reasonable priced drinks.
10. Get some work done
This is by far my least favorite option, but when golf, tennis, sun bathing and boozy boat rides are not an option…. catching up on housework, school work or paperwork is a good idea.
