The Metropolitan Opera, the largest association of classical music in North America with the “Metropolitan Opera: Live in HD” program, invites you to enjoy its sixth opera “The Merry Widow”, a musical composition by Franz Lehar, showing on Saturday January 24th here in the Marina Casa de Campo!

As “Le Nozze di Figaro,” “Carmen” and “Il Barbiere di Siviglia”and “Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg”, “The Merry Widow” is another example of a comic opera. This operetta has enjoyed extraordinary international success since its 1905 premiere in Vienna and continues to be frequently revived and recorded.
The Merry Widow originally had no overture; Lehár wrote one for the Vienna Philharmonic to perform at his 70th birthday concert in April 1940.
“The Merry Widow,” and operetta in general, responds well to this blending of worlds, with music that is, at its best, substantial yet effervescent. The work’s librettist, Victor Léon, wrote that operetta “is not caviar for the people. Its purpose is to serve as entertainment, ‘pur et simple.’ ” The genre, characterized by its cheerful stories, catchy tunes and spoken dialogue, is committed above all to pleasing, said the New York Times.
The great Renée Fleming stars as the beguiling femme fatale who captivates all Paris in Lehár’s enchanting operetta, seen in a new staging by Broadway virtuoso director and choreographer Susan Stroman. Stroman and her design team of Julian Crouch and costume designer William Ivey Long have created an art-nouveau setting that climaxes with singing and dancing grisettes at the legendary Maxim’s. Nathan Gunn co-stars as Danilo and Kelli O’Hara is Valencienne. Sir Andrew Davis conducts.

If you’re looking to enjoy an entertaining and captivating show, you simply must attend the presentation of “The Merry Widow” – on Saturday January 24th here in the Marina Casa de Campo!
It is a play that will make you think while you enjoy. It’s a luxury to not be missed!
