It was at 9:30 pm when about 60 residents of both the La Romana and Casa de Campo communities gathered at Toñito’s to enjoy the special evening with a variety of food, drinks and live music (“Songs to women”), that exalted all Dominican and international women alike. The musical performance was presented by Adriana Green, a local singer who has recently become very popular, following her successful participation in a major musical contest in the Dominican Republic. Her voice is also well known by local La Romana residents since she has, for many years, been a radio station announcer in La Romana.

Adriana Green sings at Toñito’s Grill in La Romana tonitos la romanaWith popular songs by famous latin singers such as Rocio Durcal, Adriana Green’s extraordinary repertoire to the delight of many ladies, who, with joy, sang along, whilst also enjoying a variety of latin foods under a themed menu divided into “packages” named “Wonder Woman”, “Charlie’s Angels” among other femail “superpowerful” characters – it was a GREAT evening!

About International Women’s day Although some events originally took place in 1911 in Germany, Austria, Denmark and Switzerland which then were imitated in several other countries, it was in 1977 when this special date was proclaimed by the United Nations as International Women’s Day. Since then it is celebrated on the 8th of March in honor of many outstanding women who in our history fought for women’s rights, as well as their participation in society and equality. In the Dominican Republic, on this day in particular, the Mirabal Sisters are commemorated. Patricia, Minerva and Maria Teresa Mirabal were three Dominican sisters who fervently opposed Rafael Leonidas Trujillo’s dictatorship (1930-1961). During this time these ladies were imprisoned along with their husbands, but were later pardoned by Trujillo himself and set free – until rumors surfaced that these three brave ladies were planning to overthrow Trujillo’s government and therefore several months later, on orders of Trujillo, Patricia, Minerva and María Teresa were beaten to death – one of many events that led to his execution by 12 Dominican men on the 30th of May 1961.
