Right at the main entrance of Casa de Campo you can see hundreds of some small birds known as Cigua Palmera (Palmchat Bird), our national bird, who along with others, receive with great fanfare all guests, visitors and residents of the Casa de Campo resort.

Their enthusiastic welcome does not go unnoticed, but have you ever stopped to really these or admire them?

But they are not only at the main entrance of the resort, the ciguitas, as they are commonly called, are everywhere in Casa de Campo resort.

The scientific name of this bird is Dulus Dominicus and is one which only found on the Hispaniola island. They use their large nests with internal separations that resemble apartments for mating.

The size of the Cigua Palmera can reach 20 inches long and it´s dominant color is olive green brown. It has a strong beak and large claws, and it feeds on small fruits, flowers and insects of different kinds.

The Cigua Palmera can live in any environment, but prefers to reside where there are real palm trees

The Cigua Palmera builds its immense nest from branches and the nest usually hosts several couples; from three to six, with each family in its own compartment. It is common for other birds to take ownership of the magnificent structure for procreation.

This bird is characterized by being very lilting, cheerful and bustling. Luckily the Cigua Palmera is found in abundance, thanks to the easy adaptation to their habitat and easy way of feeding and reproduction. We can guarantee that you’ll see them all over Casa de Campo!
