School’s out for summer! Most, if not all kids love the end of the school year and look forward to spending the summer vacations relaxing and playing – but what happens to the kids of parents who still have to work all summer? The Hogar del Niño, children’s day care and education centre in La Romana, unlike most schools doesn’t close for the summer holidays – but instead runs a summer camp, providing children with somewhere safe and fun to spend their summer!
The Hogar del Niño summer camp, now in it’s second year takes place every July and is aimed at the Hogar del Niño’s smallest children – the babies and toddlers, who throughout the summer vacation spend their days at the Hogar del Niño enjoying fun educational activities. Designed to be different from their normal classes, summer camp focusses on educational fun, with lots of singing, games, contests, painting and even karaoke!
This year, the Hogar del Niño received a great number of volunteers from the Casa de Campo La Romana community as well as from abroad, who helped care for the children at summer camp.
At this year’s camp, thanks to Canadian volunteer Valeria Wiebe, the children started English classes, where they learnt the basics of the English language such as the alphabet, simple phrases and fun songs – although English is taught at the Hogar del Niño school, English classes don’t usually start until 7th grade , so learning the basics now ,gives these kids a great head start! As well as English classes, Valeria has also started Computing classes – something which in today’s technology orientated world cannot be started soon enough and is no doubt a fascinating and fun experience for the children!
