Last Thursday the 26th of April, the Casa de Campo community and the students of the Altos de Chavón School of Art and Design celebrated the opening of new art exhibit “Expresiones”, presented by the first year art students of the school.
A wonderful new initiative and fantastic way to showcase the talents of the students, “Expresiones” is the first art exhibit ever comprising of art works created only by the first year students from the Altos de Chavon School of Art and Design. Withe different scenes and areas of the beautiful antique village of Altos de Chavon depicted in the student’s artwork it was clear that the magical and artistic vibe of Altos de Chavón had proven a great inspiration for these young artists.
Although the Altos de Chavon art gallery has, for many years, presented the designs and art works of it’s graduating students during the “End of Year Exhibit” (this year opening on May 12th), it had never before opened an exhibit exclusively for first year students, and so it was a fantastic opportunity for the students to proudly present their year’s work to their family friends and art lovers of the Casa de Campo community.
Students of the Altos de Chavón School of Art and Design

Jonathan Sánchez, first year student of the Altos de Chavon School of Art and Design, who has already become an architect in Santo Domingo. “This is common. Its a painting of an area in Altos de Chavon located under one of the restaurants near La Cantina (La Piazzetta) a very closed space. The assignment was based on integrating colors and moods of the atmosphere, so since this was around 10am, I decided to use some red and orange tones. Basically this seemed to be quite romantic, the way in which everything was seen from inside, how you seem to have so much freedom within a very small space”.
Generous Fontana, who has favored the world of fashion design, because “that is where the talent is” Although not yet assigned a particular name, according to Generous, this painting was her second attempt at the assignment. “In the previous class I did a good job, I went down to the river and I was pleased with my work, but when I got back to class, I spotted many flaws….and felt very depressed. So for the second attempt, I decided to stay close to the school – because when I went to the river I came across two snakes!”
