felipe alou inmortales revistaLast Thursday the 7th of February 2013, the celebrations surrounding the 4th annual inductions into the Latino Baseball Hall of Fame began with a welcome cocktail at the “fan cave” in the Marina Casa de Campo and the debut of INMORTALES, the official magazine of the Latino Baseball Hall of Fame. Excited to meet the baseball luminaries of 2013 for the first time (as well as to present them with INMORTALES), I, Rebecca Hughes, editor of INMORTALES (and Casa de Campo Living) arrived at the “fan cave” on the Paseo del Mar early (or rather on time) – only to be met by other baseball fans also awaiting the stars of the evening. But in the absence of the the baseball stars – all the attention turned to INMORTALES and before I knew it I became the star as these hardcore fans oohed and ahhed over the magazine – and even asked me for MY autograph! (At this point I would like to thank my incredible INMORTALES team; Laura Perdomo – designer, Yenddy Brito – journalist, Paola Marte – journalist, Rosanna Ramirez  – sales and coordination and Philip Silvestri – boss / emotional support!)

As the cocktail began and the luminaries and other baseball stars began to arrive, everyone – including the latino baseball legends themselves scooped up a copy of the magazine – and many even embarked on a mission to get it signed by the many players present at the event.

“A true Home Run. Congrats to you and Silgon Staff. Rebecca [Hughes, editor of INMORTALES] will be immortalized!”

— Roberto Weill, founder and president of the Latino Baseball Hall of Fame.

In attendance at the event (and therefore admiring the magazine) were latino baseball legends; Felipe Rojas Alou, Tony Olivo, Teddy Higuera, Rennie Stennet, Antonio Armas, Octavio Rojas, Victor Davalillo and Teresa Alou (representing her late husband Mateo “Matty” Alou), as well as Sharon Robinson, the daughter of Jackie Robinson, an American baseball player who became the first black Major League Baseball player of the modern era, when he broke the “color line” in debuting for the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947, and Luis Clemente, the son of Puerto Rican Roberto Clemente, winner of 12 Golden Glove Awards, and the first latino to reach 3,000 hits.

Following this star-studded gathering the celebrations continued on Minitas Beach with a dinner in honor of Puerto Rican legend, Roberto Clemente, and then throughout the weekend – with the unveiling of statues at the Paseo de los Inmortales in La Romana, a cocktail with the Casa de Campo hotel management team, the Honorary Chairman’s dinner hosted at Casa Grande, the INMORTALES golf tournament on the Teeth of the Dog, the “Cooperstown Hour” hosted by Jeff Idelson President of the National baseball Hall of Fame and finally the Grand Induction Ceremony at the Altos de Chavón amphitheater, followed by the founder’s dinner hosted by Roberto Weill at his Casa de Campo villa.
