This morning I woke up expecting to hear Hurricane Irene rattling the windows and pounding on the doors…..but nothing. Here in Casa de Campo the sky is blue and the sea is calm – is this the calm before the storm or has Hurricane Irene disappeared?

Despite appearances from my bedroom window, Tropical Storm Irene did not disappear over night – in fact she actually developed from Tropical Storm Irene to Hurricane Irene as she passed over Puerto Rico, making Hurricane Irene the first hurricane of the 2011 Atlantic Hurricane Season.

Hurricane Irene, update Monday August 22nd, 8am
• The centre of Hurricane Irene is currently North of Puerto Rico
• Hurricane Irene has maximum sustained winds of 75mph / 120kph
• Hurricane Irene is predicted to move West and then North West – hitting the northern coast of the Dominican Republic
• The entire country of the Dominican Republic as well as the Bahamas are now under a “hurricane warning”
• According to forecast models the centre of Hurricane Irene will hit the Northern coast of the Dominican Republic in approximately 7 hours (around 3pm this afternoon)

What does this mean for Casa de Campo and La Romana?
That the sandbags were probably unnecessary!!
• Hurricane force winds extend up to 15 miles (30km) from the centre of Hurricane Irene – meaning if she tracks north as predicted hurricane force winds will not be experienced here in Casa de Campo La Romana
• Tropical Storm force winds extend 150 miles (240km) to the NORTH of the centre of Hurricane Irene – meaning if she tracks north as predicted, tropical storm force winds will not be experienced here either.
There will be heavy rain
• There will be floods, mudslides and landslides across the Dominican Republic
• Don’t panic! Stay indoors and hopefully by Wednesday we can be out playing golf on the Teeth of the Dog again!

In summary: It will rain, but we will not be blown away! What a relief!
