Scotiabank fundacion mir bright futureIn an event that took place yesterday, Wednesday the 7th of August at the Fundacion MIR boys’ school, Scotiabank presented the charity with a donation of RD$1,000,000 as part of their program “Bright Future”. This program is something Scotiabank has been working on globally  and seeks to help Dominican institutions in improving both health and education for the children most in need in the Dominican Republic.

Fundacion MIRThis generous donation will be used to pay for the tuition of 23 students studying auto mechanics at the Fundación MIR, as well as their books, supplies, uniforms, field trips and even to buy a bus for their daily commute! The 23 students who will be receiving these scholarships were of course present at the event, taking a day off from their summer vacations to thank both Scotiabank and Fundación MIR for their kindness and to show how important what they are doing is to them. Some of them, showing off their eloquent abilities to speak in public, learned at Fundación MIR, stood up and shared how and why MIR has made such an impact on them.
“For Scotiabank, supporting education is one of the cornerstones on which we build our strategy of contributing to the communities where we are present. It is because of this, that when we saw the opportunity to support these talented young students, we had not doubts about offering our collaboration to Fundación MIR, so they can continue with the beautiful acts of kindness they have been doing in La Romana.”

— Chiara Borrelli, Scotiabank First Vicepresident and General Manager

Lian Fanjul Fundacion MIRLian Fanjul de Azqueta, President and Founder of Fundación MIR addressed her thanks to Scotiabank. “Scotiabank’s contribution will serve to allow 23 disadvantaged young boys of the La Romana community to have access to a technical education, which has been proved, guarantees financial independence to those who receive it.” She then went on to add, “We are very proud of the success of our current and past students. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, the collaboration of those with an educating experience and the community leaders, we are able to achieve this beautiful educational experience.”

And this event is just a hint of the contributions the children of MIR will be receiving as we approach the Fundacion MIR Family Weekend this Saturday the 10th of August, which will include the collaboration of Tiffany & Co with their “mystery blue box” fundraiser. Fruits of such collaborations can already be seen as the Campo Nueva Esperanza’s (the boys school) Primary School has expanded from 10 children per class to approximately 26 per class, having recently built three new, beautiful and completely equipped classrooms. This primary school, which just opened in 2010, is evidence of how Fundación MIR has been growing to allow their touch of hope to reach more and more kids each year.
