The president of the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN), Abdulla Shahid, held a meeting with the main directors of the Patronato Benéfico Oriental (PBO), together with whom he visited the multiple social action projects sponsored by the foundation which helps in the socio-economic development of the most vulnerable communities in the city of La Romana and the eastern region of the country.

The visit of His Excellency, who is also Foreign Minister of Maldives, began with an extensive tour inside the facilities of the Hogar del Niño school, a comprehensive center that is part of the programs developed by the PBO and that since its foundation has been characterized by providing educational services, medical care, and food thanks to the support of private donors and other contributions from private institutions, such as the Central Romana Corporation.

The school welcomes 1,800 boys and girls daily, from newborns to completing high school at 18 years of age, providing them with all their meals every day.

“In its more than 45 years, the Hogar del Niño has been a transforming educational center in the lives of thousands of young people, who multiply that positive impact within their family and in the community that surrounds them,” said Xiomara Menéndez Dájer, president of the PBO.

During his visit, the UN representative toured all areas of the Hogar del Niño, including the classrooms, the cultural pavilion, the children’s room, the comprehensive stimulation area for students with special educational needs, and the innovation center for learning mechatronics, digital programming, and other technological tools.

The itinerary also included a visit to Diagnostica Social, the most modern medical imaging center in the Eastern region, provided with specialized personnel and state-of-the-art equipment in magnetic resonance imaging, tomography, bone densitometry, and radiography, highlighting the human quality that characterizes all the development programs of the PBO.

“For me, it has been moving to be able to visit and learn about the valuable work carried out by the Hogar del Niño and the Centro Diagnóstica Social in favor of the community. You can see that it is a project developed with the heart and I am interested in making it known in the General Assembly”, said Abdulla Shahid, President of the United Nations General Assembly.

The visit culminated with lunch in his honor, offered by the hosts, the PBO, Casa de Campo, and Central Romana, at La Piazzetta restaurant in Altos de Chavón, after a tour of the Casa de Campo complex, where he was able to appreciate the sustainable growth of said tourism community, after successfully overcoming the effects caused to the global tourism industry during the pandemic.
