The British Chamber of Commerce of the Dominican Republic (BRITCHAM) celebrated the final of its 8th Annual British Polo Cup on an exceptional afternoon at Casa de Campo on February 25th.
The winning team was Power Infrastructure, composed of acclaimed polo player and Argentine champion Alejandro Muzzio, Bijai Singh, Modesto Constanz, and Miguel Mendoza, who won the cup by beating the Casa de Campo team by a minimal difference. The latter missed their player Leo Matos, who was replaced by 14-year-old Alexito Schad, son of team player number 4, Alexander Schad.
The referee was Federico Martelli, and the tournament was jointly organized with Fernando Arata, Director of Polo at Casa de Campo. The event included a parade by the Armed Forces Cavalry, and the children of the Hogar del Niño performed the national anthem.
“It was a family event where we awarded 8 cups, 1 MVP (Most Valuable Player) award, and a prize for the best polo pony, among others,” said Amauris Vásquez, President of BRITCHAM. He added that even more importantly, the event supported an important cause, with food trucks, drinks, DJ, live music, and family games.
BRITCHAM took the opportunity to recognize prominent Dominican polo players who played in the first British Cup 33 years ago, such as Bijai Singh, Fernando González, Federico Schad, Ramón (Papo) Menéndez, Manuel José Baquero, Fernando Arredondo, and Alfonso Paniagua, among others. Maureen de Tejada and Anton Tejada were also recognized for their support of BRITCHAM and polo.
RD$2,500,000 was raised to support the needs of children through Hogar del Niño and Save the Children Dominican Republic, focused on developing reading and comprehension skills in children from 1st to 4th grade. This education program also works with families and schools to ensure the reintegration of all children into the education system.
