Weaving workshop Chavón

New to the Altos de Chavón Workshops are lessons in weaving! For a while now they have offered instruction in pottery and now include weaving tutorials as well, where Casa de Campo hotel guests, villa owners, and more can enjoy an afternoon with hands-on instruction by Chavón’s finest artisans.

From Monday – Friday afternoon classes are available for both children and adults, and include a 15 minute tour of the facilities where you’ll learn about where the materials come from and how the processes are set up prior to starting. Explanations on the different types of threads and looms used are provided, while set up of the looms is already taken care of since it can take up to a day to prepare!

The clay is sourced locally, and descriptions on the machinery is given to teach how the clay is mixed, and the processes of firing and glazing. Demonstrations in design and technique by the professionals follow with the remaining segment of the hour for hands-on activity! The most popular glaze happens to be transparent to showcase the natural color of the Dominican soil.

Just a minimum of three people is needed for a lesson, with a maximum of 10 in each workshop. Hotel guests can make their arrangements through the concierge, and villa owners can call the Villa Owner’s Club. The package price listed in the flyer below (US $64 for adults and $46 for children) includes transportation and a translator since instruction is given by the artisans in Spanish. Workshop reservations made through the Emilio Robba Art Studios have a reduced fee that does not include transportation or translation, and is ideal for residents. If you prefer additional lessons throughout the week, month or even year, a feasible cost and schedule can be arranged to work more independently and frequently on your craft.

Altos de Chavón provides a great opportunity not only to learn a beautiful skill set but also have the surrounding environment play part in the authentic experience. Nicole Dickson, manager of the Art Studios by Emilio Robba encourages locals and visitors to partake in the Chavón workshops: “The theme ‘Discover your Inner Artist’ really says it all because everyone can be an artist. The whole point of the workshops are to experience what Altos de Chavón is originally – what makes it alive – the museums, the School of Design, the studios – they all represent the beating heart of the artisan village and culture that we want to share.”

All of the money raised from the workshops (minus hotel fees) go to support the well-being of these artisans. With around 25 years of experience, they have valuable lessons to share and skills that showcase amazing talent. Within one afternoon, you’ll learn the history surrounding the craft and use the tools provided to create your very own piece of art.

In the weaving workshop, you’ll make a placemat on a large loom, and within the pottery lesson, it’s up to you to decide what you want to create on the spinning wheel and then you can personalize it on the carving table adding additional designs. The pottery pieces take time to dry though so hotel guests should plan their workshop around their departure, giving ample time for the pieces to solidify! Shipping can be arrange through the hotel, if not.

So take the time to enjoy one of these workshops or BOTH in Altos de Chavón. Additionally, clay can be purchased as a souvenir for take home, and – insider’s note – even works wonders as a cosmetic face mask! The clay arrives at the workshops in rocks by the pound and is grounded and wetted for pottery production, but the dust itself mixed with a little water is a healthy, regenerative face-mask! Nicole even mentioned that the Kardashians are big fans of the beauty properties provided by the clay when they visited Altos de Chavón themselves and took part in the pottery workshop!
