Also taking part in the opening was Daniel Hernández, general manager of the Casa de Campo Hotel who said “for the organizing committee, it is a great honor to dedicate the 37th annual Casa de Campo Tennis Tournament to the men [Ramon and Luchy Méndez] who motivated Juan Ríos (at the time the Director of Tennis) and Vincenzo Mastrolilli, to found this annual tennis tradition in 1979, which was originally named the ‘Torneo Siboney.’”  He also added that “not only did Ramon and Luchy found the tournament, but they have also been present at every single event, helping with the organization.”

Throughout the day, the more than 150 national and international tennis players started competing in their various categories. The most notable matches of the day was the success of local La Romana player, Pedro Mercedes, who beat Alejandro Rosario of Santo Domingo, 8-2 in the division C-2 (40), as well as the triumph of another Dominican, Alexander Rozemko who beat Carlos Maldonado from Puerto Rico, 8-6, in the same category.

The 37th Casa de Campo Tennis Tournament will be played at the La Terraza Tennis Club through until this Sunday August 31st, when the prize-giving ceremony will take place approximately at 1pm depending on the duration of the match.
