The Vice President of the Dominican Republic and the program “Progressing with Solidarity” (Prosoli) launched the 3rd National Contest of Painting for the Values last year wherein artists from 18-35 years old submitted art pieces with a common message: prevention of violence against women and proclaim a new masculinity. These pieces have been exhibited throughout the country, and tomorrow will open at the Aldea Cultural Santa Rosa de Lima in La Romana.

The competition, which carries the motto, “Art and Culture of Peace” awarded prizes of $ 100,000 pesos to 1st place, $ 75,000 to 2nd and $ 50,000 to 3rd. Also, three honorable mentions with prizes of $ 25,000 pesos were given. The winners were announced back in April of 2016:  Narcizo Rincón Rodríguez, with his piece Alma Desnuda; Yocelín Ramírez, with Papi y Mami; and Voz del Subconsciente, by Rafael Hernández Peguero. Honoroble mentions went to Adrianny Almonte, with her piece, Aguas Turbias; Roxalba Francisco, Inocencia Interrumpida; and Ángel Jiménez, with Soldado de Amor.

Among the objectives of the contest are to promote the integral and artistic development of young people, as well as their identity, and to promote values through creativity and artistic expression as part of the campaign Bien por Ti. Furthermore, to promote peace, the new masculinity, equality and respect for women.

The Vice President of the country addressed the artists with the following words:

Dear young artists:

I am very proud of you; you set out to translate values with the theme “Art and Culture of Peace,” making a beautiful contribution with your talent to respond to the national need to rescue and promote human values and citizens that characterize us as people who are noble, united, and peaceful.

I know that many of you attend or have attended art schools where you have organized exhibitions, participated and won other contests in the country and abroad; but I have the certainty that this opportunity has been special, because the greatest incentive has not been the prize money, but the cause for which you worked for and were inspired by.

I urge you to continue producing art, making it a means to express the best of you, to enhance the values of the Dominican people, and to contribute to the construction of a better country. Good for you, good for all of you!

Dra. Margarita Cedeño

Vice President of the Republic
