On Friday the 2nd of July, the Altos de Chavon art gallery will be celebrating the opening of a new art exhibit – ‘Orange Dream’ with an inauguration cocktail, starting at 7.30pm.

Exciting Dominican artist Eunice Mateo is launching her first home-country exhibit after spending nearly a decade in Asia. Her “Orange Dream” cycle of oil paintings opens July 2 at Altos de Chavon in La Romana, D.R.
Mateo creates abstract art that merges organic forms with psychedelic swirls, earthly textures with exotic surfaces. She favors warm colors of the spectrum such as vivid oranges and reds, and specializes in blending and balancing both color and texture, while avidly exploring new techniques to load her surfaces with character.
She sees her work as zero percent politics and 100 percent passion. There is no agenda when she begins a new painting. “I start putting color on the canvas and then the painting starts talking to me. I see things. I say, ‘Talk to me. Tell me what you want to be.’ And then things start to happen.”
“Usually, by the end of it, the painting is saying something, there is some meaning, some concept. Ideally, it can speak that concept for itself without me having to explain it,’’ Mateo says. “But it’s OK for me if people see their own concept. That’s always an interesting part of it.”
Mateo strives for the right balance of color, texture, depth and heat in her paintings. She says much of the result often seems to emerge from the canvas itself.
“The painting has to have its own soul. It has to come alive,” she says.
Mateo has lived since 2002 in Thailand, where she has held solo and group exhibits. In early 2010, she was invited to one of Thailand’s key annual artistic events, a weeklong retreat in Chiang Rai with the country’s top artists and art professors. The resulting works become a traveling show culminating in an exhibition at the Queen’s Gallery in Bangkok.
“There were 150 artists, from all around the world, and I was representing the Dominican Republic! It was very emotional for me to see the Dominican flag at the events,” she says.
‘’Being alongside all those other artists doing their work with such energy, 150 artists together. It doesn’t get much better than that.”
Mateo was born and raised in Santo Domingo. She has a bachelor’s degree in tourism and hotel management and has worked in the furniture, tourism, hotel and
jewelry design industries, but always had a passion for painting. In recent years, she has worked under the tutelage of the versatile Bangkok-based artist Roy Hill.Mateo’s works are in private collections in Asia, Europe, the United States, South America and the Caribbean.
La prominente artista plástica dominicana, Eunice Mateo, llega este próximo 2 de Julio para presentar su primera exposición en su país natal, después de pasar casi una década radicada en Asia.

Su ciclo de pinturas de óleo “Orange Dream” será exhibido en la galería de arte de Altos de Chavon, en La Romana.
Mateo crea arte abstracto que combina formas orgánicas con remolinos psicodélicos, texturas terrenales con superficies exóticas. Ella favorece los colores vibrantes y es especialista en mezclar y balancear el color y la textura, siempre explorando ávidamente nuevas técnicas para dotar sus superficies de carácter.
Mateo desarrolla sus obras basándose en 2 conceptos fundamentales: Libertad y Pasión.
La artista manifiesta que no hay agenda para empezar una nueva obra, sobre ello enfatiza: “Empiezo a poner color en el lienzo y la pintura empieza a hablarme. Yo veo cosas. Yo le digo : Háblame, dime que quieres ser. Y desde allí, las cosas empiezan a fluir.” “Generalmente, al final, cuando termino, la pintura me está diciendo algo a mí, pero me gusta que la gente vea su propio concepto. Ésa siempre es un parte interesante para mi.” Agrega la artista.
Mateo se esfuerza en dar a sus obras la porción correcta de color, textura, profundidad y calor. Ella dice que mucho del resultado a menudo emerge del mismo lienzo. “La pintura tiene que tener su propia alma. Tiene que tener vida, ‘‘ella dice.
Mateo ha vivido desde el año 2002 en Bangkok, capital de Tailandia, donde ha llevado a cabo exposiciones individuales y de grupo. A principios del 2010, fue invitada a uno de los acontecimientos artísticos anuales más importantes de Tailandia, un retiro de una semana en la provincia de Chiang Rai, al norte del país, donde participan los más reputados artistas y profesores superiores de arte. Los trabajos más destacados dan como resultado una exhibición que viaja por todo el país, finalizando en la galería de la reina, en Bangkok.
La artista expresa: “Habían 150 artistas de todo el mundo y yo representaba la República Dominicana!!! Fue muy emocionante ver la bandera Domicana ondeando en los diferentes eventos”, agrega además: “Trabajar al lado de tantos artistas, de diferentes estilos y culturas, se recibe una carga de energía superior, no existe una sensación mejor que esa. ‘‘
Mateo nació en Santo Domingo, Republica Dominicana. Tiene una licenciatura en Hoteleria y Turismo, ha trabajado en la industria del mueble, del turismo y de la joyería, pero siempre mantuvo una pasión especial por la pintura. Estos últimos años, ha trabajado bajo la tutela del versátil artista radicado en Bangkok, Roy Hill.
Las obras de Mateo están en colecciones privadas en Asia, Europa, los Estados Unidos, Suramérica y el Caribe.
