The Metropolitan Opera, the largest association of classical music in North America with the “Metropolitan Opera: Live in HD” program, invites you to enjoy its seventh opera “Iolanta / Bluebeard’s Castle”, a musical composition by Béla Bartók, showing on Saturday February 21st here in the Marina Casa de Campo!
As “Le Nozze di Figaro,” “Carmen” and “Il Barbiere di Siviglia”, “Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, “The Merry Widow”, “Les Contes d’Hoffmann and “Iolanta / Bluebeard’s Castle” is another example of a comic opera. It is a one-act opera by Hungarian composer Béla Bartók. The libretto was written by Béla Balázs, a poet and friend of the composer, and is written in Hungarian, based on the French literary tale “La Barbe bleue” by Charles Perrault.
Bluebeard’s Castle was first performed in Italy at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino on 5 May 1938. The production was conducted by Sergio Failoni and starred Miklós Székely in the title role and Ella Némethy as Judith.
“Things seemed a little off and tentative at times. This was unfortunate, because many elements of the production by the innovative Polish directorMariusz Trelinski, in his Met debut, were compelling. The performances were close to being outstanding, especially the charismatic Russian sopranoAnna Netrebko in the title role of “Iolanta,” a blind young princess, and the alluring German soprano Nadja Michael as Judith, the wife of the depressed, secretive Bluebeard.
This production should take shape as the run continues. There is already much to savor and think about.”
