4 passengers on one bike? Not only should this not be possible, but this family are making it look incredibly easy and even comfortable!

This photo, contributed to us by Carlos Arriaza sadly does not show anything particularly unusual in the DR, motorbikes overloaded with up to 5 or even 6 people is actually quiet common – the sad truth is that for many (indeed most) families bike is the only way to travel. When I first arrived here I saw people travelling in this way and I thought – how can that family do that with their child, but then I realised how else would they take their kids to school or the doctors?

Of course there is a funny side – when Carlos posted this photo on his Facebook profile, he wrote the phrase ‘el casco es obligatorio’, which means ‘the helmet is obligatory.’ It is Dominican law that all drivers of motor bikes or mopeds must wear helmets – which is a step towards making life on the Dominican roads safer, but a little ironic given that there are not rules against travelling whilst carrying large animals, other vehicles or your entire family…and yes we have literally seen it all!
